I have the fairly typical season opener pessimism thats been ingrained in me as a Flames fan. Hope they surprise me today.

I also still have residual trauma from the playoff series against the Avs where they dummied us, so that's playing into my feeling of dread for tonights game as well.

Really hoping the good guys surprise me tonight.

Pleased that Backlund is ok but sad that we won't see Bennett at #2C, where I think he would have done well.

Oh, and not that anyone cares, but I have Rittich in my pool, I will sit him expecting the loss so that we get the win by SO.

This match up is always interesting. Zadorov is always trying to fight Bennett. Very curious to see if he is still as keen to get in Bennett's face with Looch on the ice.

Kind of weird to see so few new faces for the season opener. A new 4th liner and that’s it.

I think he should have seen the writing on the wall. They asked him to waive to go to Calgary. They needed to shed some salary to sign Marner. He didn't want to leave but if they tried to trade him once, they will likely try to trade him again. He, or his agent, should have been able to figure out that he is likely to be moved and they could have talked to Dubas to see if they can help find a location of his choice.

So, either Kadri's camp didn't have foresight to see another trade coming, or he truly just didn't want to come to Calgary.

This is a pretty different way to start the year.

They're usually in Vancouver, Edmonton or at home to start. Being in Denver against a team that pissed you off might be just the combination of things needed to hit the ground running. I doubt the Avs are as motivated. They're probably feeling overconfident in that they have "solved" the Flames and ripe to be knocked off that pedestal.

I think Bill Peters comes out and doesn't look terrified of Bednar tonight and actually out coaches him... Unlike in the playoffs.

If that means we get 18+ minutes of sam bennett then so be it. That probably would've helped back in April.

Some more season opener stats:

Prior to that 2009 win, the Flames had not won the opening game since 2001 and 1994 before that. That's only 3 wins in 25 Years worth of opening night games! You have to go back to the Stanley Cup contending teams of the 80s and early 90s where the opening night game wasn't pretty much a predetermined loss.

Lol everyone thinks that the Flames are going to come out pissed off at the Avs tonight. They didn't come out mad in Game 4, and they didn't in an elimination game 5. What makes you think they will 6 months later? I'm hoping for a win of course, but I don't expect any guns coming out blazing tonight.

The frog is excited for tonight! Going to grab some brown banded crickets with a calcium powder coating for him to snack during the game.

Pretty simple really. The team was shell shocked in the playoffs and simply lost their confidence. New season, time to reflect, time to rebuild the confidence, and time to exact revenge.

Ya I agree I don’t think we can get too cocky yet.

After they made the playoffs in 15 they add superior players in Hamilton and Frolik then finish bottom 5 (not that shocking though)

After they made the playoffs in 17 they add better players in Smith and Hamonic and finish with 84pts (10 less than the previous year)

After they won the west with 107pts in 2019 they add debatably worse players

I feel this team is a bona fide playoff team but they still need to prove it.
