Most of my friends have 3-4 year old Macbook Pro's which are still alive and kicking.
The only "obscene" markup I've ever run into on the Macbook line is in their up-grade options - but then show me a vendor that doesn't milk that. Other then that, Macbooks are priced competitively - they just aren't configured to the low-budget market.
The biggest gripe I have with the product is that the audio line in isn't amplified, meaning it's USELESS as a mic in. Leaving you requiring a USB audio adapter... which Apple has screwed the drivers up on. So basically, anyone using a USB headset/mic will encounter garbled input after about 20-30 minutes. Drives me absolutely nuts. Apple changed the driver in one of the 10.5 updates and has since blamed any audio issues on 3rd party support.
