Well this news has hit me like a tonne of bricks, especially with him having passed on my birthday. His music has been the soundtrack in my life, his lyrics gave me pause, sometimes for days as I pondered their meaning. As a small town rural Canadian kid many of his songs gave me something to relate to.

It's a sad day, bourbons all around. RIP Gord, Canada's poet laureate. You lived your life with eloquence, class, fully completely and with grace too.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

It's been a pleasure doing business with you, Gord. You never disappointed. You brought me up when I was down. You didn't die of vanity, and you'll be buried where you want to be. I hope Ry Cooder's available to sing your eulogy.

I'm flying into Toronto for a conference tmrw. Will make it a point to sneak off to the Horseshoe tavern for a drink. I want to see those checkerboard floors. RIP Gord and thank you.

Our hearts break on news of the passing of Wicapi Omani, “Walks Among the Stars”, Gord Downie an ally & friend.
I did not know the indigenous had given GD a name...how appropriate.

Tough holding back the tears when Long Time Running played on the radio this morning. Such a mix of emotions - loss, pain, grief, and hope that he's now at peace. We will miss him.

I saw Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip in the late 1980's at The Old Scotch, a bar on the edge of downtown Calgary. The lead-in band that night was called "Bruno Gerussi's Medallion." Talk about an all Canadian night. Fun time.

RIP Gord Downie.

How powerful and influential is Gord Downie?

He ressurects Cowperson from the abyss.

Good to "see" you RC.

Thanks.

I actually posted in the solar eclipse thread and the running thread in past weeks. Apparently I'd been absent since 2013. I was surprised it was that long.

My impetus for showing up was to contribute to the skunk thread but the problem got solved before I could chip in. Coincidentally, I caught a nice looking but bothersome skunk last week.

It meant a lot to him... Gord got really emotional during the ceremony, it's a tough watch on a day like this. So heads up to anyone who doesn't want to cry on their lunch break.

Man, first Tom Petty and now Gord. I think Tom was a little tougher for me because it was totally unexpected but this one stings, too.

Last summer a good friend of mine drove out from Calgary to Victoria to pick me up and drive me to the Shuswap. We caught the 9 PM ferry from Victoria to Tsawwassen and then drove all through the night to get to the cabin we were staying at with some other friends for the weekend. We blasted the Hip the entire drive and then continued to play it for the rest of the weekend. "Little Bones" and "Yer Not the Ocean" pretty much became the anthems for that weekend. That was the last weekend I ever saw my friend, as he passed away 3 months later. Ever since then, I often have trouble making it through a Hip song when it comes on the radio but deep down I'm also smiling because of the memories of my friend that the music evokes in me. I feel like I have this permanent link to my friend that I can access at any time just by putting on the Hip. Thank-you so much for that, Gord.

RIP

Major events in my life will always be connected to specific Hip songs/albums.

I count myself lucky to have seen this band "grow up". The first time I heard Small Town Bring Down I was hooked. I played the #### out of that Blue self titles EP.

I have a great memory of last summer myself, my wife and two kids took Hwy 40 from High River to Kananaskis blasting our favourite Hip songs. It is just one of so many happy and painful memories I have with the Hip.

Much like you Rube, I hope my friend Mark is dancing with Gord.

He had one of the most selfless last year's of anyone I can think of. He didn't dedicate to anything except reconciliation. That was his bucket list. Mine might include bungy jumping, but Gord decided to further a cause so dear to his heart. What an amazing man he was.

They just played Nautical Disaster on the radio. That song makes me cry a bit. May his memory and music live on.

When I was 18 I did a several month road trip through the States with a buddy in a van. Back then we had a CD player suspended by velcro(to minimize skipping!) on the cooler between the seats. We only had around 30 CD's for that entire trip, amoung them were Tom Petty and The Hip. They were both in heavy rotation on the long driving days. Whenever we ended up at a camp ground, sitting around a fire with other young Americans we'd play The Hip for them. They were blown away, loved it. I like to think we were the Johnny Appleseed of Canadian music at the time.

Last year when my wife and I drove the Yukon, up the 700km on the Dempster to Inuvik I made sure to load a small MP3 player(Thanks DoubleF!) with every Hip album, as we hadn't listened to much of the newest stuff. It was pretty awesome driving there, with literally no one around, The Hip keeping us company. Something about their music and driving in isolated places feels so right.
