Treliving getting roasted for trading an American leaguer for future considerations is hilarious.

This is an absolute nothing trade. Davidson isn’t an NHL defenseman. Relax.

Forbort is an NHL defenseman. He was Doughty's partner last year.

Davidson (other than with the Oilers) is not an NHL defenseman.

Giving up a 4th to go from Davidson to Forbort sounds about right.

San Jose's AHL affiliate is in as sad shape as the parent team. The Barracuda is in last place by a considerable margin. They must need a warm body on the blue line to finish out the season.

Once the dmen are healthy it does seem like we dropped some draft picks for one of Fortier or Gustafson to sit in the press box and watch the game, unless they push Kylington and Anderson out of the lineup.

Not really a big difference though is the point. Yellow smartie vs a green smartie. Both are meh.

Which SJ team though? Sharks or Baracuda?

I’m telling myself he had a pick and Thornton involved here, but Thornton declined. That way, I can keep hating Thornton, and sleep tonight thinking Tre tried to add a forward.

I'm not upset. I just question the necessity of trading even a middling pick for somebody like Forbort whose counting stats have been nothing short of replacement level over the last four seasons. These types of players can be found on waivers dozens of times a year.

I don't dislike Davidson - I thought he was solid. But you can't look at their stats and tell me he's as good as Forbert. Plus Forbert is huger.

Gastafson has played 20+ mins and lead the Blackhawks D in points in each of the past 2 seasons. He is not a popcorn muncher and is a large upgrade on Kylington. He will play in the top 4 for the Flames for the remainder of the season and in whichever org he ends up in for the forseeable future.

He's a high teen point getter. Way more than Stone in the last 4, for example (and they are close in age). And way more than any D on waivers that I can remember. But I don't think his counting stats are what's important.

Hard to see him pushing Giordano, Brodie, Hamonic or Hanifin out of the top 4 once everyone is healthy. Maybe he pushes Kylington out, but in any event assuming Hamonic comes back this year it seems unlikely that both he and Forbort are in the lineup at the same time with a healthy lineup.

Forbert is way better than waiver fodder. This isn't a Fantenberg/Schlemko type

Hamonic is pretty unlikely to come back IMO.

I'm an advanced stats fan, but I do wonder about it's ability to really gauge defensive d-men and truly adjust for competition and zone starts.

The Point Hockey had some interesting Forbort stats on twitter for last season.

EV DZ Outlet Passes - 10.1 per game (7th in the league)
EV DZ Puck Battles Won - 2.2 per game (15th in the league)
EV DZ Stick Checks - 1.5 per game (7th in the league)

Now I know you need to be careful with micro-stats like these but those all feel like areas that the Flames need help in.

Plus I think the value is fine. Here are two L.A Kings D-men at 5v5 over the last three seasons:

Player A:

TOI: 3121
CF%: 48.0%
HDCF%: 47.5%
xGF%: 46.8%
Zone Starts: 48.1%
Goals: 12
Points: 30

Player B:
TOI: 3020
CF%: 48.4%
HDCF%: 47.3%
xGF%: 46.7%
Zone Starts: 45.4%
Goals: 3
Points: 31

Player A is Alec Martinez and cost the Knights two second round picks. Player B is Derek Forbort and he cost the Flames a 4th.

He's not going to be a gamebreaker, but it's not bad value.
