I know you aren't one of them but so many people were clamoring for a top 6 forward and other than a couple, they simply weren't available and those that were cost an exorbitant amount.
Adding a defensive defenseman like Forbort IMO is huge, he is really being underrated by the posters on here. The only reason his cost was so cheap is he missed the first half of the season with a back injury. He is a legitimate stay at home top 4 defenseman when healthy and he's just recently got back up to 20+ minutes a night (played 23 in his last game). He should be a nice add to our PK as well, which is desperately needed with Hammer out. I wouldn't be shocked in the slightest if he were re-signed by the Flames.
As for Gustafsson, I'm less excited. He should help our PP and he was great last year but I never thought he'd come close to repeating those numbers again. But maybe he'll fint in and find his transitional game again and really turn our PP2 into a weapon.

Tough to fault Treliving too much here. Cant waive the white flag when youre very much in it. Injuries don't allow you to trade Hamonic and your other biggest UFA is your current best dman. Who else was he going to sell? Not much goalie movement today to suggest that Talbot wouldve gotten us a high return.

Well it worked for a few seasons in Vancouver. Almost got them a cup. Although those teams we far superior to the Oilers.
They strike me as a team like last year Flames. Everything is going right. They should cash in now. It might be back to no playoffs next year.

I'm pretty happy with the additions too. Not because they're amazing but because they're cost effective.
We're definitely in agreement here. I would have liked to add a top 6 forward, sure. Especially one with term. But realistically, the deadline isn't the time to do that. That's a draft day deal. Looking around on the deals that did get made, I definitely do not feel like we missed out on anything

I’m happy with the moves the Flames made. Would have liked to have seen a depth forward traded for a pick (Czarnik), but overall good job by BT.
I am happier with the oilers moves... please, please keep trading futures, because this team is for sure a cup contender.
Honestly, I do think the oilers got better today, but that is only due to the fact that they have McDavid. He will make anyone look better than they are.
Bring on more Kassian type contracts!!!
Can I copyright “Inflated by McDavid” ??
I’m lovin it.

This team needs the core forwards, their best players, to be their best players. As long as Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm and Tkachuk aren't consistently the team's better forwards every night they won't go far, like this season has shown us. And you're not going to trade those guys today, the summer is when you start rebuilding your roster with major moves.
I'm not going to rag on Treliving today, the prices were high for buyers. The only thing I think I can look back and maybe be negative about him was his willingness/commitment to the core of this team after the playoffs, saying they deserved another shot at it after having a solid regular season for the most part last season. In retrospect, they should have blown things up before the season, as the team we saw in the playoffs was basically what this team is........not good enough.
This summer will be busy, I think. I would not be surprised to see both Gaudreau and Monahan gone, a new coach, and some other moves here and there. I think this team looks much different in October. Lots of nice pieces in Calgary, make the right moves in the summer and this team could be very good again quickly.
|
I was hoping for more moves today, but BT was in a tough spot. He knows what the team can do (look at last year), but they have been pretty average/horrible for most of this season (specifically Johnny and Mony). With the injuries on the backend, but still being in a playoff spot, his hands were tied.
The above says it best... they need their best players to be their best players. If Johnny/Mony/Lidholm/Tkachuk/Gio don't play like their paid to play, no addition will really matter.

Treliving gave a huge endorsement to Mangipane and Dube stating he didn’t want to stunt their growth as one of the reasons they didn’t spend to add up front. Sure that likely some GM speak but i hope it motivates both players and they are able to keep/step up down the stretch. I would include Bennett in that group as well as Treliving did say he has been playing one of his best stretches of hockey since switching to Centre.

Well, the day after, I'm not overly impressed...but realistically didn't think this iteration of the Flames was going to go far in any event. Won't stop me cheering for them (I could NEVER cheer for tanking or losses) but it also doesn't inspire me with a great deal of confidence.
This team - where "the answers are now in the room" as they all love to tell us...needs to CONVINCE me that they DO have the answers. I just haven't seen that all year. They play small, scared, inconsistently and not all that smart or fast some days.
They've put themselves in a bit of a corner - yes, they're still in a playoff spot - but their home record has been poor and they have a LOT of home games coming up. Time to pull on their big boy pants and prove something to themselves - and by extension, to us.

Not really. Colorado, St. Louis, Dallas, Vegas, Vancouver and Edmonton are all at 93% or better.
To round out the top 8, they have two teams currently chasing us, with Nashville at 58% and Arizona at 47%
Then there's Calgary at 44.6%, Winnipeg at 32% and Minnesota at 30%.

It also depends if you go weighted or 50-50.
Weighted we are at 44.6, while Nashville is 58.2 and Arizona above the cut line at 46.7.
50-50 has us at 56.4, Nashville at 59.5 and Arizona at 33.8, so a pretty huge swing.

It could be sneaky good actually as they don't torpedo or help their chances in the playoffs this year so they didnt send a negative signal there. They weren't winning the cup anyway. If either of these two D end up working out they sign them for less than Brodie or Hammer and shift that salary to the forward group FAs. Add Dawson Mercer or Connor Zary in the 1st rnd + Taylor Hall and the team would look pretty good with Chucky on RW.

And the very next game, they switch him back to Jankowski's wing.

Gus had more points than Josi and Letang last year.
Only Morgan and Dougie had more goals.

This could also create a huge opportunity for Matthew Phillips and/or Glenn Gawdin should the need arise for more skill in the top 9 should injuries occur upfront.

I guess he doesn’t overly care about Kylington’s growth then.
I understand defence is a bit of a different beast but he is unlikely to see much ice time for the rest of the season with both of his acquisitions.
I will admit the idea of a Kylington-Gustafsson pairing is a little concerning but I have high hopes for the kid and it’s been 2 years in a row he’s been bumped by new adds at the deadline.
I get it though, with Hamonic out and Gio on the mend we only really have Stone as another defensive dman.

He'll be fine. Brodie, Stone, Hamonic, Forbort and Gustaffson are all UFA. I'm guessing the following scenarios happen:
Brodie walks due to the rumored family reasons.
Stone gets a cheapo 700k to be the 7th D for another year. Why not, he's already on the payroll due to the buyout anyway and seems pretty cool about being pressboxed for long periods of time.
Hamonic signs somewhere out east for significantly more than Tre & Flames (and by extension, Calgarypuck!) were willing to offer. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief.
Gustaffson re-ups in Chicago for family reasons.
Forbort might be in a scenario where he considers signing with Calgary. But even if none of the UFA defencemen come back, this is what the blueline looks like next year:
Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Kylington
Valimaki - Stone
Which on paper actually looks not half bad. But if Brad signs Forbort, I expect we'll see one of the young D not named Rasmus to be traded for hopefully an impact top six RW.

The big difference between Kylington and Dube/Mangiapane, is the latter two have been taking their roles and playing extremely well; Kylington on the other hand has not been playing as well.

I'm not as unhopeful regarding a Brodie re-signing. I don't know as much about Gus' situation, and obviously a longer look is needed. I wouldn't mind him being a Hamonic replacement though they obviously play different sides. I suppose it's possible that, with a Brodie re-sign, and if Kylington and Valimaki impress, Hanifin could be dealt. I could see something like the following. I'd like to see Stone relegated to spot duty at best or preferably cut loose in favour of, say, Yelesin.
Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Rasmus
Valimaki-Kylington/Forbort (wrong handed I know) or Yelesin
or
Gio-Brodie
Kylington-Rasmus
Valimaki-Forbort/Yelesin
or without Brodie
Gio-Rasmus
Hanifin-[Brodie replacement]
Valimaki-Kylington/Forbort/Yelesin

I think they had identified and are auditioning Gus and Bort to be Brodie and Hamonic replacements at a lower cost than the incumbents for next year.
Kylington is a guy they trade at the draft to make up the picks they spent to bring the 2 new guys in. I cant imagine Kylington is thrilled with his situation here right now and there may not be any spot on the team for him at all next season.

I agree with the Gus and Bort as potential replacements for Brodie and Hamonic. I don’t think Kylington will be traded though. In a way he reminds me of Brodie when he first came up, lots of offensive potential and a bit of an adventure in his own zone.
