He threw him down like a skeleton. A little bit funny.

If Petterson didn't weigh 120lbs it probably wouldn't have looked so dramatic.

How would you be reacting is that was Johnny being thrown to the ice?
You mean that one hand "body slam"? Who is this freak of nature - the hulk?

Ya. That's what can happen when a boy sized body meets man strength. End of the day he just isnt strong. Hell of a player, but may need 2 or 3 years getting Swoole to avoid this type of thing.

Yeah the part where he threw him on his head when the player was vulnerable

Yeah awesome play! Love seeing concussions! That’s hockey! Yay head trauma!
Physical intimidation was always part of the game.

This was one of the reasons teams were reluctant to let young guys who weren't physically mature enough to play were delayed in entering the league.

Folks want all the skill and these young kids and smaller players. Last i checked this is a contact sport. Let's just get rid of contact altogether, make it a pure skill only league. At least then there's no conflicting messaging about the league.

Didn't regehr do something like this to hemsky like a dozen times? Were you really upset about that sarich hit on Marleau that turned around a playoff game?

Except this falls under accidental head trauma for being a skinny man in a big man's league. I said this earlier, but Tkachuk suffers way worse every single night and manages to play through it. The same concerns for Gaudreau exist for Pettersson. If you're extremely slight, it's going to be hard some nights, and some players will go out of their way to make your night miserable. Learn how to avoid contact.

I don't like seeing him hurt, but this was a hockey play that went bad for a smalllish player. There's no serious intent to police here. Just a guy battling for his ice and trying to make things harder for a skilled player.

I mean, if every player that is bigger and stronger gets a free pass to manhandle the smaller and weaker players the league would just be a lot less exciting. Just because he can pick the kid up and slam him doesn't mean he should.

I'd rather watch players like Johnny and Petterson than a bunch of big, "truculent" bums. League has to protect the skilled guys.

my 2c.

You guys see this video of Jim Benning making it through his standard day to day routine?

Guy through him to the ice with one hand.

If this was not a kid but a man he would not be dominated like that.

Nothing dirty about this play.

Welcome to the league kid. Now hit the gym and eat, then eat more.

Such a skilled young player but he is a boy out there, not a man.

If I were a Canucks fan I would be livid.

Yet guys a boy in a mans league. I am sure in a year or two this will never happen again. Guy will bulk up and be a lot stronger.

I like the kid, and I call him a kid because that is what he is. Kid is gonna be a helluva player once he adds some muscle to that body.

Canuck players never responded because they never expect the kid to be so weak. Nothing dirty about this at all.

Here's how I see it:

1) Pettersson was never thrown on his head. His shoulder made contact with his ice.

2) Contact was never made with the head in the initial hit

3) It looks like the concussion was from either (a) his head reverberating off the boards from a clean hit or (b) the sheer force of the hit

Can someone create a slow motion GIF?

The hit wasn't all that bad. Ya maybe he finished a little stronger than he should have but that is not a suspendable offence. This could have been taking care of if the NHL still had enforcers.

At the time no but a lot has changed including what we know about head injuries
The Sarich hit, for me, also shouldn’t be part of the game

No i strongly disagree. It's a contact sport that requires high level skill at the same time. This type of hit (bigger guy physically dominating a smaller high skill player that results in injury) is core to the physicality and intimidation factor of a contact sport.

If we aren't ok with it, then frankly hitting must be removed from the game and make it a pure skill sport. Hitting in pro hockey is NOT simply about separating puck from player.

I think it should have been 2 minutes for roughing, but that's it.

Welcome to the NHL kid.

So if it’s ok because he’s a small slight player everyone’s good if that had been Johnny?
