They would trade Nylander so they could upgrade behind Andersen when they already have Sparks ?(who they would then have to trade because he would be scooped up on waivers immediately)
Leafs ask for Nylander is not a future number 1 goalie. They would be seeking a top 4 Dman for sure in return.

Not at the expense of Nylander they sure wouldn't. That's a huge price to pay for a better backup.

^ But thats exactly what is being suggested, only it would be the Flames that would flip him for Saros?

I honestly think the flames should be looking for another center. We do not have strong enough center depth to be a real contender.
I'd really like to see Backlund on the 3rd line.
I think something like a Brodie for Duchene and a 2nd would be a good trade if we are serious about making a push this year.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Bennett-Duchene-Neal
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Dube-Jankowski-Ryan
Giordano-Hamonic
Hanafin-Andersson
Valimaki-Stone
Smith
Rittich
In the summer, trade/buyout frolik and use that money along with the smith coming off the books and the big salary cap increase to resign tkachuk and duchene and grab a goalie like Varlamov

The Flames have a clear need for a young, potentially long term number 1 goalie. The Leafs do not. No one trading for Saros is doing it because they think he is only a backup.

The Leafs, despite their defensive shortcomings, have had one of the most consistent goalies in the league over the last couple seasons capable of playing at a near 0.920 save percentage and is under 30. As a backup they have an up and coming Sparks.
I'm not saying they are set at goal with top tier goaltending, but it's not a huge cause of concern. The concern is their defense.

The Leafs have a need for defense. Nashville has that. If we take Saros out of the equation, the Leafs are better off just dealing Nylander to Nashville.
Anyway, the original idea was to get Nylander to flip him for Saros. To me that didn't make much sense from the Leafs side but not worth a continued debate.

You consider Andersson top tier?

Indeed I do. He’s as solid as anyone in the league.

Yeah, but why would the Leafs want a top 4 defenseman, if not top pairing, from Nashville when they could get Frolik from the Flames?

3 way deal? Leafs get 2 D (one from each), Flames get Saros, Nash gets Nylander. Fill in the gaps to make it even somehow.

This seems more reasonable than the idea of dealing with Toronto to get Nylander for whoever and then flipping him.

To Toronto: Ekholm + Valimaki
To Calgary: Saros
To Nashville: Nylander + Gillies
Contingent on Nashville getting Josi signed, but now the expansion draft has them not making tough decisions as they protect their top 3 and Rinne (if he is going to be signed long-term as speculated).
Toronto gets two cost controlled defenseman, one in his prime and one about to enter it.
Flames get their starting goaltender of the future.

Personally there is no way I give up Valimaki for Saros
Goalies are never a sure thing, and Valimaki already looks like a top 4 d-man this year.
Saros looks great now, but that Nashville team defense is amazing.

I’m pretty confident Saros is a sure thing at this point. But I agree in that I wouldn’t want to move Valimaki.
Something around Brodie or Hamonic or Stone or Kylington or even Andersson. Fine. But not Valimaki.

Agreed. No way would I give up Valimaki. Hes as central to the furture core of the team as pretty much anyone else. You are going to need young, cost controlled D in the near future with the Tkachuk extension looming. And goalies, even really good goalies, have a way lower trade value then many of us expect, which is the exact opposite for good top 4 (potentially top 2?) defensemen.

The Flames aren't winding up with Saros from a GM like Poile by only sending out one of the aforementioned defensemen. Even with another team involved.
The Flames need to move out their 2019 1st for starters I would think.

I'm way more interested in giving up my first next year for a goalie then a 19 year old rookie defensemen that doesn't look out of place in the NHL.

Ride out Smith for the year and sign a goalie as a UFA this offseason. Varlamov, Bobrovsky, and even Talbot are all good choices. I'm sure there are others as well.
Frolik and Stone aren't negative value pieces that you can't unload as long as you aren't expecting a great return.
