I guess they couldn’t jump through the hoops required to save them.

Have they even been used since 1988? In all my years living there, I don't remember seeing an event that utilized the ski jumps.

Didn't they used to host banquets and weddings in the tower?

The big 90m tower is not coming down. Apparently one of the two smaller towers was occasionally used by a kids ski jumping club. But the cost to maintain the facility was too much to justify for 70 kids, so the two flanking towers are the ones to be dismantled.

If the tall one stays at least that's good since it's iconic.

TBF the 70m tower is used almost every year for the National Championships (senior and junior levels) and the smaller jumps are used for training. So it isn't only for kids use but they are right, the use is for less than 100 people.

truthfully this is the reason i supported the olympic bid, and the reason i was so against the idea of adding whistler to the bid.
At some point in time Calgary will need to decide if they bite the bullet and point money into continuing as a major center for sporting.

Personally I think single use sports that require significant financial investment will be phased out or sequestered to only a handful of venues in the world. If the space an infrastructure isnt used recreationally then how can you really justify its existence. Bobsled, luge could also find themselves in that category
especially if changes in the sport mean older facilities are no longer usable.

Well the one time they might have come in handy--the Eddie the Eagle movie--they weren't even used. Some ski jump in Germany was used in the movie (which ruined it for me)!

Ski jumping is a dying sport. Honestly, how many people in the world actually do it? I’m glad they are going to keep the large tower. It stands as a legacy to the 88 Olympics and should be refurbished. I would continue doing the zip line in the summer but also turn the top into a restaurant and observation tower. Not sure what is even up there (never been inside), but it could Be something really cool. I would demolish the seating bowl at the bottom and turn it into an aerial or snowboard park.

Ski jumps will not make a difference in that decision and the other facilities have done a good job of getting money for required upgrades.

Was there ever a time when it a popular sport?, I'm guessing its popularity now is about the same it was a decade ago, another minor sport that no one cares about except during the Olympics, much like every Olympic sport, any one go out and watch some rhythmic gymnastics or ice dancing lately?

Not so much the ski jumps specifically. but symbolically, the desire to have a world class sporting culture and legacy. The splitting up of the bid, the rejection of said bid, and closing the ski jumps feel like three nails in that coffin back to back to back.

I think it actually would have been worse if they filmed at COP. The anachronism would have been much too jarring.
