Default Anyone here ever got a ticket reduction for driving in the HOV lane?

I got nabbed a couple of mornings ago on Centre Street N. I live and work downtown so I don't really drive that street a lot but just happened to take it that morning to run a quick errand. Yeah, I know, ignorance is not an excuse, I don't need a lecture...

Anyways, the cop said they would give me the reduced bylaw ticket that was $60 instead of the supposedly full $200 something amount.

What would the chances be of me getting a reduction in this situation? Never actually been to the court for this kind of thing before, but I see online that people do receive reductions for tickets often.

Sounds like you already got a reduction.

It's $60. I can't think of a ticket for a driving infraction cheaper than that.

Yah, i don't think you'll get a further reduction. In the eyes of the court, you already got the break by paying the $60. But you could always try to see. To me, it doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle.

I would be okay with the city installing heat scanners and dropping a munitions charge on every single-occupant vehicle that drives through the HOV at Centre N @ McKnight.

That'll learn em.

There has to be something for them to reduce the ticket to. They don't just take money off. If its the lowest ticket amount already, and I am guess it is, they won't lower it more.

And you may get an earful if you try and they look at it and see you already got a reduction.

Write a cheque for $5 and mail it in with a note that says "take it or leave it".

Can you fight the bylaw ticket. Sometimes in “helping you” they charge you with something you didn’t do so you can fight it on those grounds rather than ask for a reduction

I'm glad they are starting to enforce those. They really needed to start doing that, or remove them all together. There is on on 9 ave SE through Inglewood that I have not seen enforced. So I either have to break the law along with everybody else, or fight through bumper to bumper traffic to get into the lane when I need to turn.

To the OP- be careful in fighting this. The may have given you the cheapest ticket possible, and you stating what happened in court could get the charge increased. They may have given you something like "failing to maintain lane"- when you really did a "driving in HOV lane."

It's pretty easy to get a ticket reduction by going to the Calgary Courts building but even if you get in early, it can still be a wait to talk to an official. If it was the original $200, it would be worth it but I doubt the possible reduction (if any) at $60 would be worth the time and hassle.

Usually, the point of fighting the ticket is to get a reduction. You got a pretty damn good reduction without having to waste your time fighting the ticket.

I'd take the small victory and move on. Pay it, you already won.

Have you ever waited at the courthouse to see a prosecutor and get the ticket reduced? Trust me it’s not even worth 60$ if they reduced it to zero !

I took it further once and went to court with one ticket (also a $60 ticket) The wait and proceedings of that was way worse than the wait for the crown prosecutor

OP should also know some cops do keep detailed notes and note the ticket reduction too. It will come up in the conversation with the crown should he try to push his luck

$60 is already a pretty cheap lesson learned in this case. Good reduction as it is

I know you don't want to her the lecture but people always looking for reductions when they know they are guilty is what slows everything down.

Been there done that! Like you said, it's not worth the time.

Besides you need a clean record before the prosecutor will consider any talk of a reduction.

This another example of why I hate society. Gets a break and a very generous one at that but still seeks to get a further break.

Take it and run and stop being so ungrateful!
