The Flames are Out in QC
Don't have a link, but it was just the headline story on KWQC 10:00 News (our NBC affiliate) that Calgary has signed the release for the Flames to break the contract and that QCSV have told the i wireless Center that they won't ice a hockey team next season.
They've lost $2.5 million over the two years.
Thanks for the efforts, the hockey, and the good times, QCSV.....nine games left to enjoy at home!
I'll post a link as soon as I find one....

Very sorry to hear this. QC seemed to be such a good fit. Did they say where the team was moving to?

I still doubt they are going to abbotsford. If they do they will bankrupt the city but who cares? Calgary will find another city to go to.
KC? Youngstown? share?

Maybe they should play right here in CGY at the Corral. They might sell-out every game, if you make it a pre-condition to getting on wait list for Flames season tickets.

I doubt that as well. From what I hear, the BOG isn't going to buy it.
And I don't think that the combined stunning personalities of Sutter and King can make it happen....

They'll try to do the obligatory 2 years in Abbotsford, pending AHL approval.
After that, it'll be another search for another city that wants two years of Flames hockey.....

Sorry to hear for our QC guys. PIM, dobbles, DS, Hoody and the rest (sorry if I forgot your names) we really appreciate all your input for the past few years.

Man that's terrible news for you guys. I was enjoying your takes on the team and hope you stick around. Great fans as far as I'm concerned and another failure for the parent Flames.

One news station is reporting this so far, which has happened several times so far this year. I guess I'll believe it when I see it, which I probably will at some point.

just to be clear,
The local ownership reluctantly requested the release from its five-year contract with the NHL Club, saying it needed at least one million dollars to keep the team afloat for another season. We're told low attendance and rising cots led to the decision.

Not a surprise, unfortunately. Seems like there was a collision of several factors that created this outcome. Marketing efforts by the team were AWFUL (including signing a broadcast contract with a radio station that no one has heard of or listens to). Unfortunately, the team's on-ice performance out of the gate here in the Quad Cities was less than stellar, this season's improvement aside. However, my fellow Quad Citians get to share the blame. It's been well-documented that a lot of fans still couldn't get over this mythical nostalgia around the Mallards. I think it absolutely absurd, but it's a reality. How any real hockey fan could prefer watching beer-league players over bonafide NHL prospects is beyond me. I'm able to turn on my TV now and watch players I've seen in action, in person, just days before (Kyle Turris, Cal Clutterbuck, Carey Price. Not to mention our guys). Call me nuts, I guess...maybe it's because I was an NHL fan long before the game arrived here.
It's sad because this area should be able to support this level in any sport. If Peoria can do it, we should be able. Maybe we're just destined to be lower-level bush-league...if we can somehow lure another team here at all.

that sentiment originated from an article in a QC newspaper. Sutter, in his very matter-of-fact way, said he would like attendance to be better. The article, and the headline spun that and made it sound like Sutter was blaming the fans. That PO the fans, including some who post here, and even after being shown the direct quote from Sutter, the sentiment didnt seem to change much, if at all
maybe it's just easier to blame the big league outsiders

Damn, that sucks. I really don't want a team in Abbotsford (Nucks territory).
Although I can guarantee you guys the team wont be moving to Calgary, we can't support another hockey team.

However, the fact is true... QC attendance is second last in the league... I am sure the QC Management would like to see the attendance better, let alone the Flames management.
If folks won't support a team, the team will move.... That fact is the same for any team NHL or AHL or WHL....
