This isn’t really important, but it’s kinda science related and really, really weird:

From the Atlantic: Somehow, a man coughed up an intact blood clot shaped like a lung passage.

Quote:
The image is of a mysterious, branchlike structure that, posted elsewhere, would probably pass for a cherry-red chunk of some underground root system or a piece of bright reef coral. But this is no creature of the deep. It’s a completely intact, six-inch-wide clot of human blood in the exact shape of the right bronchial tree, one of the two key tubular networks that ferry air to and from the lungs. And it was coughed up in one piece.
NSFW because it's a bit gross.

NSFW!

China has their rover scampering around the dark side of the moon now.

This bit is a little concerning though...

Quote:
“It’s a small step for the rover, but one giant leap for the Chinese nation,” Wu Weiren, the chief designer of the Lunar Exploration Project, told CCTV. “This giant leap is a decisive move for our exploration of space and the conquering of the universe.”
That escalated quickly...

I also like how they kind rip off Neil Armstrong's words...Typical China!

We're going to see a militarization of earth's orbit at some point.

The terror weapon of the 80's was the concept of FOBS, it reduces the warning time to zero and gets rid of nuclear missile launches. It also allows you to destroy electrical grids.

I also expect that the next space race is going to be more around for this nation instead of for all of mankind.

Are you suggesting China also copied Nasa's fake moon set? I hadn't considered that option...

The Search for Life Beyond Earth with astrobiologist Kevin Hand

https://www.facebook.com/events/414910665655339/

Quote:
Astrobiologist and Emerging Explorer Kevin Hand works with NASA to search for life beyond Earth. His mantra is, “follow the water,” has led to him investigate Europa, Jupiter’s fourth largest moon. Although his focus is a world millions of miles away, Hand also explores the extremes of Earth, like the north slope of Alaska and the glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro, to see how microbes survive in harsh climates.
Jan 27th and 28th at Arts Commons.

Cool

Quote:
Back in 2008, US researchers led by the famous biologist John Craig Venter made headlines for synthesizing the genome of the bacterial species Mycoplasma genitalium from scratch. Like Venter’s group, the Swiss group synthesized the genome of a bacterium, Caulobacter ethensis, a benign species that lives in freshwater. Unlike Venter’s group, however, they simplified the genome down to a bare-bones version, called C. ethensis-2.0.
Simplifying the bacterial genome is useful because it makes it easier to synthesize the genome — a technically challenging process — and to study the minimal genes needed for a cell to live. This could one day let scientists design simplified micro-organisms that are more efficient at producing DNA-based therapeutics and manufacturing enzymes and nutrients.

The first ever photo of a black hole was released today:

https://twitter.com/user/status/1115964886687854593

There's a number of live streams happening on YouTube right now regarding this. Here's a BBC article.

Quote:
Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy.

It measures 40 billion km across - three million times the size of the Earth - and has been described by scientists as "a monster".

The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world.

I bet we'll look back at this in 10 years with an HD picture and it'll be like the Pluto before/after.

We need to fire a basket ball at that thing. I know it would take trillions of years to get there. But imagine some alien UFO flying by just as the basketball spiraled in and the alien drivers exchanging high fives while yelling "Nothing but net boom shakalaka"

Apologies if this isn't the proper thread, thought it was on topic.

Only watch if you have the full 30 minutes, truly amazing. Filmmaker creates time lapse of the universe. Such sources and voices heard throughout include David Attenborough, Craig Childs, Brian Cox , Neil deGrasse Tyson, Janna Levin and others.
