So they get paid a ton because we vote them in and then they get paid a ton when we vote them out. They're geniuses.

And it is exempt form property tax. Now, it's tough to tell from the city implication, but I think all the grass, the parking etc are all church land, it says they are all except. That's over $6 million in assessed value, which is around $30 000 in taxes. Develop that and your probably at $12 million or more. The city gives that up every year. Multiply that by all the church land in the city and it starts to hit real numbers. Maybe they should pay taxes like the rest of us...

Correct me if I'm wrong here...
I don't disagree, but other NFP other than churches can apply for the same property tax exemption.

Honestly, I never understood why any NFP gets property tax exemptions. They use all the same stuff as the rest as residential and commercial. IMO, make all NFP pay property tax and if you want to give NFP money, they should apply for a grant.

I believe it's exempt because it's City owned land, and they are turning that particular parcel into affordable housing: http://www.calgary.ca/CS/OLSH/Pages/...velopment.aspx

Thanks, I had assumed the gravel parking lot was the churches, and wasn't sure about the green space. I guess the church has just been using it for free parking. So that area will get a lot worse on Sundays...

CPS is a terrible workplace, BTW.

Also if you're a women, sexual harassment is extremely prevalent throughout.

I received my property tax update yesterday and all I can say is wow. That's a ridiculous increase and I wish the election was being held now.

Why? You think the UCP would get even more seats?

My monthly payment is going down by $1. I guess I should be happy I'm not getting an increase.

My taxes increased by 61%, which is just plain astronomical. I get paying taxes, and yes I want funded services and all that. But there is something not right when the increase is that high.

I know, I was just digging at him a little because his beloved Liberals didnt even win their own seat.

The thing about Property Taxes in Alberta, and Calgary in particular is that they have been a broken system for a while now.

They are heavily leveraged towards businesses and we're going through an economic downturn with the most 'business unfriendly' Government we've ever seen.

There were always going to be consequences for that.

And now we begin the painful but necessary, transition.

Which, trust me, as a business owner and a home owner, I am not looking forward to.

Is it an assessment issue? That is ridiculous. That's simply bad management.
