I don’t know that Monahan lost his man on the first goal so much as just got beaten in a foot race. Poor communication between Monahan and the D, who wasn’t ready to pick him up.

Monahan, for whatever reasons, hasn't improved in his own end one iota.

Not so sure that's a fact.

I think he has improved, the problem is you have to slice and dice his stats with and without the fourth line.

And that's not a Monahan thing. If you do a with or without on a fourth line player the whole team is better not playing with Richardson, Lewis or Ritchie.

Monahan xGF% with Lewis and Richardson - 31.7%
Monahan xGF% with Lewis only - 43.9%
Monahan xGF% without both - 57.6%

You can't be a good defensive player (which he's not) playing with poor players.

Richardson specifically has been a drag on teammate numbers.

Lewsi xGF% is also better away from Monahan than with him. Same for Richardson.

I have a hard time interpreting those "with and without" numbers but if you're trying to isolate Monahan's performance I think you look at other players to see if he makes them better. Dube for example is better with Monahan than without.

All this assumes I'm reading natural stat trick right.

I looked at Dobber and almost everyone is either better with Monahan or about the same in a few cases. Except Gaudreau IIRC.

I’m not 100% confident in dobber though.

Richardson is the bigger issue from what I can see.

You can pretty much right up the whole team as a positive to not be on the ice with him.

Trevor Lewis with almost no difference, but horrific with or without.
Lucic off 24% with Richardson
Monahan 21%
Pitlick 21%
Ruzicka 19%
Dube 40%

Only Ritchie seems to get an uplift.

Monahan would be a 55% xgf player if you take out the 50 minutes he's played with Richardson.

I hear what you're saying about looking at it both ways, but another way is to isolate a player and see how many players he helps. Richardson tanks everyone.

Yeah he seems to help Dube, Lucic and Pitlick, but hurt Gaudreau and Coleman.

The issue there though is Coleman and Gaudreau play on 60% lines most of the time, any move from those trios would be a step backwards.
