Such a great hockey player and even better human being. The ultimate role model and ambassador of the game. Was a privilege to watch your career in Calgary. As my favourite player Iggy personified the ideals of sport, competition and teamwork. I don’t know if we will ever see another leader as great as Jarome. All the best Iggy and thank you for what you did for the Calgary Flames and this amazing city. Congrats!
Robbed of a Stanley Cup, or the Hart Trophy, which both slipped through his fingers by the narrowest of margins.
As odd as asking about the only two things that ever eluded one of the game’s greatest power forwards was, it generated the type of response that said as much about the man as his gaudy stats.
“No, it’s sports,” said Iginla, presumably flashing that world-class grin of his beneath the Hall of Fame mask provided.
“I wasn’t (robbed). With the Hart Trophy, I would have loved to have won it. It’s an opinion. When I saw how close it was, that I was tied (with winner Jose Theodore, in 2001-02), I was still thrilled to be there. What an honour.
“The Stanley Cup obviously hurt more. That was a stinger.”
Quote:
The goal probably should have counted to complete his 2004 playoff odyssey in which he carried the team on his back by scoring big goals and fighting in every round.
But, again, such is life in sport.
Quote:
few bounces later and, guess what, his Olympic jersey is now hanging in the Hall of Fame.
As he points out, one of his goals in that tourney rolled over the line by an inch or so.
A bounce.
The result: 50 years of Olympic drought ... over.
Eight years later, he gets the puck to Sid for the Golden Goal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
“That was one of those moments where it ends the right way,” said Iginla.
I think Crosby forever owes Iggy for that moment. Crosby’s legend was cemented permanently in Canadian lore when that goal went in… and iggy battled two guys in the corner to get it to him. Crosby should forever credit Iggy for that historic play any time it is ever even mentioned.
Man, those quotes about losing to Jose Theodore based on one ballot that didn’t even give him a 4th place vote, and the 2004 goal that was in hurt badly.
They gave Peter Maher a line at the end as "Flames-related" and because media members aren't full HHOF inductees but I consider Peter as much or more of a Calgary Flame than most of the guys on those list.
Was just going to ask if anyone had this, recorded it last night to watch today while I work and of course it ran long and somehow our outrageously priced cable companies don't have technology that can figure out if something runs past its allotted time.
Iginla is a nervous awkward public speaker but still so funny and engaging.
"I can't mention my time with the Flames without giving a big shoutout to Craig Conroy and Alex Tanguay, who were a big part of my success in Calgary. Tangs, I knew you were really good from the first time I stepped onto the ice with you. Connie... it took a little longer. "
Every single time I think about that list, I get pissed off - and I don't think that will ever go away.

^ Without looking Imma bet that every other guy on those lists is in the top 100 players.
Iginla was better than Sundin, Kurri, Gartner, Lafontaine, Lemaire, Modano, Newy, the Pocket Rocket, Shanahan, Ratelle, Mahovolich, Cornouyer and Delvecchio (and that’s just counting the forwards on the 100 list that I saw play).
ETA: Iggy, Thornton, Hawerchuk and Malkin can make their own club.
