That is better. I also like Hrudey mostly because he is very affable and sometimes entertaining. It does seem odd to me that you framed the comparison the way you did in the first place.

Someone told Panger he needed a catchphrase and there ya go. Holy Jumpin' was born. Awful.

It's like the goal calls from half the home team radio announcers in the US. Everyone has to have their catchphrase or over the top celebration. So half the goals scored sounds like OT game 7 winners with some rehearsed phrase to accompany.

Even yeah baby was planned by Maher. At the time (1986) I remember it being played on morning shows and they kind of teased him. I always assumed it was a gut reaction call but learned later it was something he had planned. But he saved it for special occasions.

I don't have a problem with catchphrases as long as they don't sound forced and unnatural. Joe Bowen saying "holy Mackinaw" is fine. But the guy in Florida (Goldstein?) saying "Hoobie-Doobie-Dooo!" whenever Huberdeau scores or the Sharks radio guy calling Karlsson "EK65" -- those are dumb.

I think Cassie suffers many of the same weaknesses as Charlie Simmer – he never told me anything above what I could plainly see by watching myself. So that’s a good comparison of two color analysts that I consider to be poor at their jobs.
I do like Hrudey a lot. Always have. I think one of the reasons is the chemistry him and Ball have – which really does add to the broadcast. I also like Loubo a lot – I love his passion and quirkiness.
Estrada mentioned DeBrusk who I agree is very good and only getting better. He’s probably the best within the HNIC stable.
I don’t mind Simpson, but don’t watch a lot of him.
I grew up on Neale and John Garrett – so still have an affinity to the latter.
For me Ferraro can be irritating but he hits the mark of offering more information than his plainly obvious to the viewer. And he’s not afraid to take a stand. For me – he’s one of the best.

I find humour in the level of insight in the past several pages so closely mirroring the issue of colour commentators’ lack of same.

Does Cassie even like the flames? She always seems to side with, and comes across like an apologist for whoever calgary is playing against.

I wonder if she is overcompensating for the fact that her husband is a Calgary Flames AGM.

I get the “tries too hard not to be biased” vibe from Cassie too, which is really my only complaint about her these days.

She isn’t the best colour commentator in the world but I will give her credit, she’s noticeably improved this year compared to last.

I like Cassie and Hrudey...i like nice people over Remenda types.

If i had my choice, i would like a goof ball in the booth once in a while like Ryan Whitney.

Who are good colour guys/gals in the US?

I like Daryl Reaugh in Dallas. San Jose has had Kendel Coyne Schofield which has been pretty good. The goon on the NJ telecasts is unlistenable. Boston crew is awful.

I think Patrick Sharp should be doing games more.

I remember him in NHL 2003 I think...those jokes and commentary got really stale, really fast.

Talking about the broadcast crew just makes me hope TSN does in fact snag the regional coverage for the Flames.

As much as I enjoy Ball, I'd happily lose him to get TSN's production values and would be intrigued to see who they offer up as the broadcast crew.

Daryl Reaugh is one of the best around and IIRC used to fill in on HNIC on occasion.

I don't mind Tyson Nash.

Phil Esposito has to be one of the all time greats. THe game has passed him by and listening to the Lightning broadcast is high comedy. He just cheerleads, shouts an occasional oh no! and gets mad at the players.

I don't like laughing at Espo because he is one of all time favorite players. But hard not to.
