They are different, that is fore sure. I think it will take a while for the group to play Suttrr’s system, so perhaps less points than last year. Might still be a better team though.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I think we are deeper and harder to play against.

I think that makes us a better playoff team

Wouldn't mind seeing them move the Lucic contract and bring in a top 6 winger, like Kessel!

I went through this a bit on the other thread:

Huberdeau-Lindholm-Mangiapane v Landeskog-Mackinnon-Rantanen
Toffoli-Kadri-Dube/Coleman v Nichushkin-Kadri-Lekhonen
Pelletier-Backlund-Coleman/Dube v Burakovsky-Newhook-O'Connor
Lucic-Ruzicka/Rooney-Lewis v Cogliano-Helm-Compher

Tanev-Weegar v Makar-Toews
Andersson-Hanifin v Girard-Byram
Kylington-Zadorov v Manson-Johsnon

Markstrom/Vladar v Keumper/Francouz

They aren't that far apart and might end up being pretty similar teams

We have really good ingredients, great coaching, I think it will all depend on the X factor of chemistry.

Just slap Phil the Thrill on that second line and let 'er buck.
Embrace the chaos.

I'd argue the Flames' team strengths just went from:
1. Winger
2. Goalie
3. Defence
4. Centre

to
1. Centre
2. Defence
3. Goalie
4. Winger

Without downgrading our Vezina-caliber goalie.

Even if we lost a bit of talent going from Tkachuk to Kadri + Weegar, it's only a small downgrade, but the overall makeup of the team is much stronger. For the first time ever we are built down the middle with two potentially p/g centres who are defensively responsible and a third .5 p/g elite shutdown centre.

Add that to a Top 5 Defence, Top 5 Goalie, Top 5 coach and an elite distributor on the wing and I think we have a very good chance of being an overall better team this season.

I'm interested to see how Pelletier and Phillips could affect the landscape at wing.

The door is open wider for them now than it was a month ago.

I'd say the way things are shaping up and with Sutter these two will be on the farm for another year.

Still have a Jack Adams level coach
Still have a Vezina candidate goalie
Now deeper at C
Now deeper on D

On paper this team is better IMO

Hopefully it plays out that way on the ice.

Yes.

Huberdeau > Gaudreau.

One of Lindholm, Backlund or Kadri will always be on the ice against McDavid/MacKinnon et al.

Weegar >>> Gudbranson

And we still have all our 1sts, our three recent 1st round prospects, and Looch.

Really hard to tell but losing to that Oiler team sucked and the two guys the Flames lost in the off season didnt deliver in that playoff series. So am personally glad that there is a new "core" and looking forward to seeing what they can do.

We weren't going to win a Cup with the core players we had. This new group of players adds much more depth to the team and will be much harder to play against.

He sure as hell wasn't this year.

Sarcasm right?

Not sure you caught those GWGs this year.

My thoughts too. JG and MT are great players but I never once got the sense that they had what it takes to win at this level in the post-season.

Flames just pulled two top players from the presidents trophy winners and a top player from the Stanley Cup winner. Pretty sure they took a step forward in the "right stuff" department.

(Cue Dr.Evil gif)
