The team is now constructed in a way that may alleviate what has been the group's Achille's heel in the last few seasons.
The Avalanche used individual game breaking skill to knock them off their game.
The Oilers used individual game breaking skill to knock them off their game.
Now with a deeper blueline and another defender that can play a solid 200 foot game, and a better slotted and deeper center ice position they should be able to defend the game breaking element.

The other day two colleagues were talking about the Flames within earshot of me. (Note, I live in Nova Scotia so Flames fans are few and far between).
Colleage 1: The Flames got grittier and stronger and added skill. I hope they win the cup, I really do, stick it to those guys wanting to leave!
Colleague 2: I dunno if they will, but I'm ok with that.
Colleage 1: Only problem is Flames fans are all a**holes
*Both slowly turn to look at me*
Me: Hey now, just because I'm an a**hole doesn't me all Flames fans are!

Yeah, you may be an A-hole but you have a A++ hockey intelligence son. Didn't he said the Flames are the best in all the land?

The Flames are a better team than a year ago, but as we seen last year at this time, a lot of people, Flame fans included, wrote the team off before the puck even dropped because it was virtually the same team from the year previous. The Flames went on to lead the Pacific and win its first round series.
I believe this team will make the playoffs…it has the potential to win the Pacific again and possibly challenge for tops in the West, or it may struggle and grab a wildcard spot. The fact that there was very little consistent success with Tkachuk and Gaudreau is reason enough to be excited about the direction the Flames have gone.
