Not bad IMO. Vancouver not likely to be a cap team anyway until Petterson needs a big boy deal

Shorter term is nice to see too. I for one like the idea of the league moving to mostly short term contracts (like 3 years max.) It would provide way more excitement.

That will only happen to older guys. The premium guys will still get 8/7 year deals I imagine.

I don't think that's the case anymore. I believe Auston Matthews type of contract will become more and more common.

It’s an easy job when the player is desperate to stay with the team, and has no desire to leave the city under any circumstances.

Yeah makes sense.
Feel like they came to some common ground that will work for both sides and really it makes more sense for the Canucks to do shorter term but higher AAV now.
Edler was probably wanting 4 years around $5M ($20M total) with NMC protection. Canucks really didn't want to risk having to protect Edler in the expansion draft.
Now they don't have to worry about the expansion draft, can eat more of the cap hit in the re-build years, and 2 years from now if Edler is still performing he could probably get another 1-2 year deal worth $4M annually if he's still performing well - which would bring him back level to the 4 years $20M he likely wanted anyways.

Probably explains the ease of exposure, he can still live in Vancouver and make a shed load extra dosh if Seattle takes him, it pretty much makes no difference which team he plays for to his family or quality of life.

You make it sound like Seattle is a Vancouver suburb. It's three hours away plus an international border crossing.
I suspect that with how strongly Edler is committed to living in Vancouver he has no desire at all to move his family to Seattle.

Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Alex Edler: 19-20 $1M + $6M SB, 21-22 $1M + $4M SB @Canucks

That is not how expansion works. If Seattle can sign Edler to a contract as a UFA then they will forego their selection from Vancouver, but otherwise they will pick a player whose rights are owned by the Canucks.

I can be in Seattle in an hour and a half by car, he wouldn't move his family he'd get an apartment to stay in for game nights and fly back and forth liberally, its an hour by plane from Coal Harbour to lake union by seaplane and costs a couple of hundred bucks

He only got 5 years because he wants to get to ufa quicker. Once he gets to Ufa he will sign the 7 or 8 year deal. I think rfa’s have discovered that by getting to ufa quicker they can maximize term and dollars.

That's what I was basically saying I worded it in the wrong way, but basically with this deal he wont be going to seattle unless he chooses too
