Icon46 Canucks re-sign Edler (2 yrs, $6 mil AAV, full NTC )

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Hearing VAN and Edler closing in on three-year deal that will not have a clause preventing him from being exposed in the expansion draft

Irfaan Gaffar
@sportsnetirf
Hearing the same thing. Dollar figure between 5-5.5 million per season.

Only 3 years, can be exposed to the draft, there's nothing wrong with that deal for the Canucks. He's still decent enough.

He wanted to stay in Vancouver. He would have gotten more term and money on open market. Good deal for Canucks.

Reasonable contract. Canucks still need to hope he doesn't dip too much but the problem with the Canucks isn't Edler, it's that the Canucks rely on him to play half the game for some reason (and that reason being everyone else is worse).

Yeah - as long as they aren't forced to protect him in the expansion draft that's not a bad move for them.

What dmen are they going to protect in an expansion draft? Edler is probably the best they have!

?

Quinn Hughes, Troy Stecher, Ben Hutton, Chris Tanev, Olli Juolevi.

Canucks D is quite strong.

Elliotte Friedman
@FriedgeHNIC
This one might end up being four years...but the key is the expansion draft loophole is solved.

Will Olli Juolevi require protection? He has not yet played an NHL game.

As for Edler, this is a good deal. It's short term and relatively cheap, and if he is expansion draft eligible, then that's a win. The Canucks are a terrible team who will continue to be terrible for another couple years, and they need to spend money on someone. With $29 m of cap space it's not like this contract is going to cause them problems.

I like it. It increase the demand if the Flames decide to trade one of their own d-men.

From the Canucks perspective. Edler is a steady presence for a rebuilding team. You can't just ice a bunch of rookies and hope they figure it out.

Quite strong is an overstatement - they have some good pieces and some young(ish) players with potential. Their problem is that they either have very small defenders (Hughes and Stecher) or injury prone defenders (Edler, Tanev and Juolevi).

If everyone was healthy they would have a good group but with the roster that they have, the probability of that is slim in my opinion.

One of the few deals so far this summer that is halfway reasonable. Good term and AAV. Fills a need on the roster.

Troy Stecher & Ben Hutton, are 6/7 D guys on a good team. Canucks backend is anything but strong.

Happy with the term, the dollar amount and the ability to expose him to Seattle.

Hutton is a bottom pairing guy, yes. Stecher is probably their best defenseman, at least until we see a full season of Hughes. The Canucks blue line is just mediocre, because they have no #1 guy (again unless Hughes becomes that) and three or four who are pretty much second pairing quality. Tanev looks busted, to me, so he might not even be that for much longer.

I consider defense an organizational weakness for the Canucks. Surprised people think their group is strong. In regards to the contract I don't have any problem with it seeing it's only a 3 year term.
