Pionk is a 23 year old right handed D, who scored 26 points in his first full year in the NHL. He is an RFA and needs to be signed, for probably about a quarter of what Trouba is going to get.
That and 20OA is a fine return for an unsigned player, who wants to sign at a premium.

And that's why I'm glad we didn't throw our first rounder away on a deadline deal. It's the only thing with a worse value proposition than big UFA signings.

So a few months of Hayes for Trouba? Not great.

He is an unsigned RFA with arbitration rights. This upcoming season will be his last before UFA.
If he stayed with the Jets he was going to get a 1 year arbitration award and then leave via UFA.

Except it was their pick in the first place and they gave it away for Hayes to help them lose in the first round.

Being the GM of the Rangers has to be a nice gig. Most UFA's want to play for you. Young players want to play for you. The fact that they haven't won a cup in several decades is kind of a major failure by that organization given they don't even need to seek players as players seek to play for them.

I will say it was pretty important for the Jets to get back into the first round. They are an odd organization in that they are top 3 when it comes to hitting on 1st round picks and 28th when it comes to games played by drafted players after the 2nd round.

Every move the Rangers make always reeks of tampering.

Not sure about the value for Trouba, but I also think Pionk is an underrated player.
He's got some skill and is a pretty tough player. He's a guy that I wouldn't have been surprised to see the Flames acquire.

The Jets get their first back and get rid of a malcontent. It's not a home run, but it's a solid single.

Chevy should have dealt with the Trouba situation much earlier, and put the team in a position where this garbage pile return was the best available. Maybe. Who knows what this dunderhead left on the table.
Chevy is a total clown who only had to get out of the way of his scouts, who were doing an amazing job. Couldn't even do that.

They got worse after the two deals...it's a foul ball at best. Lemieux isn't a bad player either

Agreed, and I'm always a 50/50 kinda guy on trades, usually seeing the benefit for both sides. This is just a bad deal, no two ways about it. The 20th pick isn't enough to make up the difference between these two guys. Trouba must be forcing their hand because that is not comparable value for the kind of player Trouba can and will be.

Small sample size and anecdotal, but I recall watching the Rangers during the regular season and I had to look up who the heck Pionk was because he was really standing out in that game. I never heard of the guy before, but he was impressive. Definitely on my radar after that game.
