Just saw the “highlights” package on tsn announcing this. Yikes!

Diagonal passes in his own zone, lazy on the puck, trying to skate the puck out in front of his own net...all leading to goals against the kings.

I miss chiarelli; he would have been in on phaneuf.

Hes the #1 Defenceman the Oilers have always needed.

In 2008.

So....kind of the 80s...just reversed!

This is a pretty solid indication that the Kings are in full-on rebuild mode and the firesale is on. There are several players on that roster that I hope Treliving inquires about.

The Oilers are desperate for any defenceman and will likely offer him a contract or PTO.

Among others, yes. Of the players available he makes the most sense for this team.

(Although I secretly fear we’re in for another year of Mike Smith)

How's this work for Ottawa? Do they get any cap relief on the salary they retained?

In my opinion they shouldn’t, they should still be on the hook for the full retained contract but I don’t think it works that way. Curious to find out.

I like that '9' is 'neuf' in French.

Well played good sir. Well played.

They get about $1m of cap relief, which means now they around $14m to reach the cap floor, so in this case the cap relief probably works against what they are trying to do.

I’m not sure what was crazier, Phaneauf’s contract extension or the fact he was traded on it not once but twice.

I guess this means LA will be attempting a quick retool and is planning on hitting free agency hard.

I'm still amazed Toronto managed to dump him in the first place, especially with no retention

I get LA buying in post East finals, but for OTT to grab him from TO is crazy. Especially how penny pincher the owner is.

Either way does this put to bed the moronic arguments that Dion trade from Calgary was short sighted because defensemen bloom later in their career?

Still the 2nd worst trade the Flames ever made (Gilmour/Leeman being the worst)
