The Trap and Gill is closing the doors for good
Quote:
“The concept has played out and I think it’s just time,” said Johnson. “When we opened way back in the day there were so many east-coasters in Alberta at the time so it was a popular home away from home for a lot of east-coasters.”
Johnson has watched customer numbers decline as the Maritimes theme became less relevant.
“Tons of people have moved back home or they’ve grown up, had families and don’t go out to bars anymore, kind of thing. It’s just not as popular a concept as it once was.”
“The expenses of owning a small restaurant have climbed so high in the last three or four years, it just wasn’t worth it anymore,” said Johnson, who took a $30,000 pay cut in 2016 to keep the business running.

Unless you're part of the mega chains, running a restaurant or bar even as your dream business is bad business.

Nowadays i suppose thats true.
there were a lot of successful indies through the years, though they have pretty much dried up and gone away between business taxes, min. wage increases, food and alcohol costs and associated taxes...etc.

Loved going there when I was younger.
I wonder if moving to that heritage location had something to do with this as well. The original location had a lot more life and personality, whereas that studio 82 location is just kind of out of the way and nothing seems to succeed there for long.

Agreed. Went there a bunch of times at the original location and it was pretty fun. After they moved, it was more of just a place with a name. It might sound silly, but even the fishing nets hanging from the ceiling in the original location really added to the ambiance. The new location was just Studio 82. The place where bars go to die.

I was wondering about the new location playing a factor too. Never did go again once they moved, not that I got old and had kids and stuff...
But that location in the hotel was much closer to the core and areas like 4th street and 17th. You could easily stumble to and from it from other places.

Too bad, I briefly lived down the street from there upon moving back to Calgary a few years ago and really liked it, good menu too. I wonder what they'll do with it now..
Maybe they'll turn it back into Studio 82, ha-ha I have lots of memories of that version of it..upstairs it used to be a glow in the dark bikini bar (different era) with 10 cent wings, and I went to school at Grandin right down the road. We'd go there for ''extended lunches'' in grade 12 (back then you could sign a waiver when you turned 18 to report your own absences) as I had a spare the period right after lunch...the amount of times I called myself in ''sick'' for period 5 Science from that establishment, good lord..its amazing I actually passed that class.

Every bikini bar is kind of creepy in my experience. What was that one in Forest Lawn in the 90s? I want to say Big T's, but I know that's the barbecue place. Can't remember the name, but seeing Forest Lawn chicks prance around in their old nasty bikinis was gross.

And leg bruises. Bikini bar waitresses love their leg bruises.

Independent breweries seem to be taking the place of these small restaurants. Don't even need to serve any food, there's a couple that are Bring Your Own Food style.

The bottom line is that if you want to go and eyehump girls then skip right over the bikini bar and go right to the strippers.

That location has just been a 'Bermuda Triangle' of bars.
You'd think that being right next to a hockey rink, high school and c-train station would be ideal but it just isnt.

I’ve lived near that Studio 82 location for close to 30 years and I can’t even count how many times that building has changed hands. I swear they just need to bulldoze that building because it’s clearly built on top of an Indian burial ground or something.

Me and my hockey team mates would go there when we got kicked out of games in junior for fighting. The guys we fought would usually join us.
