Ballon D'Or is like NBA MVP the last 10 years, Messi (like LeBron) could easily win it every single year, but it seems like the standard he's held to is much higher than anyone else. Based purely on individual performance, he should have won, his stats were (once again) ridiculous.

yes, but they always look at team success when it comes to Ballon d'Or. I think it's stupid too, but that's how it's always been ... and neither Barcelona in the CL nor Argentina at the WC did anything special this year.

he was a key player in another CL victory and took Croatia to a WC final. I really don't know what else he could have done. I think you could argue that Varane would have deserved it as well, but I think Modrics impact was a lot bigger.
I don’t even think he was the best midfielder at the World Cup, Varane was key in both and he won it. Again, I’m not saying he isn’t a great mid fielder but if you are going to say stats don’t matter than Varane deserved it more.

^^Yeah and that's why Pogba is somehow 15th despite being pretty invisible for most of United's season, especially the second half. It's an individual awarded that's determined by team success. That's one area where baseball mostly gets it right because often (like this year) you'll see guys on losing teams even win awards.

Many had a much better case than Modric.

I said accolades, not stats.

2018 CL Champion
2018 WC runner up
2018 CL Team of the season
2018 FIFAPro World XI
2018 UEFA Midfielder of the year
2018 UEFA Player of the year
2018 WC Golden Ball
2018 WC Team of the Tournament
2018 FIFA Best Award

Plus a few lesser accolades like
2018 Croatian player of the year
Bunch of IFFHS awards

So yes, his accolades speak for themselves when it comes to Ballon d'Or voting. I think you could make strong cases for Griezmann and Ronaldo for Ballon d'or, but Modric was no slouch this past season and is a deserving recipient.

Kind of odd to vehemently argue Modric doesn't deserve it, but not really point out another player that clearly deserves it over him.

I clearly did point out players who deserved it more, if you were not so offended you would’ve read the players I believed were better.

Don't you wish you were this guy.

In front of 50,000 fanatics in Bangkok. Semifinals of the South East Asian Cup. Last kick of the game.

The Asian Cup has started in the UAE if anyone cares. I caught the first half of Australia's loss to Jordan and it was some of the worst football I have ever seen.

Today's exciting match ups are China vs Kyrgyzstan, South Korea vs Philippines, and Iran vs Yemen.

Thailand lost 4-1 to India!

Imagine if India became a soccer power?

Only at the Asian Cup...

The injury ravaged Socceroos have called Rhyan Grant. Just one problem though. He needed to get approval for his mullet!

Rhyan Grant says his mullet ‘got the tick of approval’ for the Asian Cup

Quote:
Socceroos defender Rhyan Grant has confirmed Football Federation Australia had to have his ‘mullet’ haircut approved ahead of the Asian Cup.
The United Arab Emirates Football Association bans unusual haircuts or colourings.

But the Asian Cup is run under AFC rules, with Grant’s mullet given the tick of approval.

“I heard that — I thought they were taking the mick a bit,” Grant told Fox Sports News’ Daniel Garb.

“But apparently it was legit that they don’t like ordinary haircuts over here so they had to get the tick of approval.

“So thankfully for me — probably not thankfully for everyone else — that I get to keep it but nah yeah it was a little bit of a laugh but I’m keeping it for now.”

Banning Mullets seems like a fairly reasonable policy.

Its not Edmonton.

Fair point. I am just laughing imagining the meeting between the Australian organizers before the tournament:

"Okay everyone listen up, here are your jobs for the tournament. Sally you are in charge of Visas. Bruce, you can handle accommodation and transportation. Lisa you can arrange the food. Johnson, last but not least, I have a really important job that will take all your specialist skills. You will be in charge of paper work for mullet approval."

I am glad I didn't bother staying up the other night to watch Australia and Uzbekistan play 120 scoreless minutes. Looks like the penalties were exciting though and damn is Mat Ryan ever good at goalkeeping.

The Quarter Finals are set: Japan v Vietman, Iran v China, South Korea v Qatar, and Australia v UAE.

they are a little excited in Vietnam.

If they beat Japan tomorrow, they might tear the country down.

Japan defeated Iran 3-0 in the Asian Cup semifinal

Wanted to show the 2nd Japanese goal. There is no way that's a penalty for handball.

Even VAR couldn't correct it.

Closer Look

Japan is so hot right now. The final could be 5 or 6 nil.

I've finally gotten over the heartbreaking Australian result. The goal is worth sharing. Definitely an early nominee for gaff of the year (at 0.55).
