Because of antiquated NCAA regulations college players are not permitted to employ "player agents." For this reason, their agents assume a role and title as "family advisor." Treliving was always talking to Fox's agent.

In other news Ferland is #8 on the TSN trade bait board for what that is worth.

Yeah....NCAA players aren't allowed "agents" or they lose their eligibility.
So they hire someone (usually a lawyer) to advise them and speak on their behalf.
It's so farcical.

If Carolina ends up well out of the playoff picture at the TD, how amazing would it be for the Flames to pick up Micheal Ferland?

Those are pretty much the same thing for an NCAA athlete. They're not allowed agents, so they have advisors.
edit: of course I'm so very late to the game.

Right, I should know that about the agent, NCAA needs to get with the times. Anyway, I'm almost positive that the story was that the family advisor had spoke to Treliving, whether that was a real agent or crazy uncle Bob remains a mystery.
2nd rounder for Ferland, get er done.

No, I don't think there is any mystery here.

Personally, I don't think it would be amazing at all. I don't think we need more depth forwards for a playoff run especially considering he would probably cost a second round pick at minimum.
Ferly had some great runs on the top line, but he was mostly invisible when playing on the third line (minus the odd game or the Vancouver series).

Yes to Ferland. ...as a rental. He's got the jam the 3rd or 4th line could use. Assuming Flames are in a playoff position, the depth is nice.

But yeah he didn’t sign after his sophomore year so no doubt there’s risk. I am certain the Flames believed there was some risk with Gaudreau too.
But what’s not so great is inventing reasons as to why he didn’t sign (doesn’t like Canada, sense of entitlement) that reflect negatively on him. There’s no need for that IMO absent some factual information.

That's not fair.
Treliving more than hinted that there was a problem in getting the player signed.
Nobody is inventing anything. We are speculating as to what the reason was, without certainty.
It's a discussion forum, seems to me that's right up the alley of what we should be doing.
Could be a crowded blueline. Could be he insisted on a spot as a promise. Could be a city that is too for North, to far West. Maybe he and Gaudreau don't get along. Maybe he hates cowboy boots.

Playoffs is a different game. The Flames are 31st in the league in hits. 15 hits/game.
In the playoffs the poster child for the small skilled team - Tampa had 23 hits /game in the playoffs after a regular season of 21 hits/game
The Flame have 4 regular players Hathaway, Bennett, Hanifin and Tkachuk that are averaging more than 1 hit a game.
Washington had 4 players for the whole playoff run making more than 3 hits/game ... all bigger and meaner than any of the Flames big 4 hitters.
Any first round matchup for the Flames will have 2-3 guys that will be willing and able to smash the Flames at each and every opportunity.
The other team will be looking at the Flames in exactly the same way the Flames looked at the 2015 Canucks.

The last Chicago team won the cup with all skill and were dead last in hits.

29.3 hits / game in the playoffs after 16 hits/game in the regular season,
In the playoffs Bickell had 5.7 hits /game. Seabrook 3.1 ... who do you see on the Flames roster that would step up for the playoffs?
5 other regulars with more than 2 hits/game.
They were also playing against softer teams in the playoffs with Minnesota actually 30th in regular season hits ... Chicago was 29th, Nashville 24th , tampa 22nd in regular season hits and the toughest team Anaheim was 10th in regular season hits/game.

Okay, so Tampa and Chicago both hit more in the playoffs.
And it is safe to assume that the Flames would too (it is the nature of playoff hockey).
So that does nothing for your attempted argument that they should acquire Ferland because they need to hit more.

I'm not sure why so many people still want to talk about Fox? As far as I'm concerned, he could turn into an all-star defenseman and we'll still have walked away as the "winners," (not that there needs to be a winner and a loser) with the way Lindholm and Hanifin are playing, and the contacts they are on.

So your premise is that all the other teams amp up their hitting in the playoffs but the flames for some strange reason won’t?
