Does anyone know if the split squad game against the oilers on Monday is going to be broadcast on TV? I checked my guide and couldn't find it on any of the sportsnet channels.

No TV but both should be on their respective team's websites. However, as was the case last year, its likely only available to people in Alberta

And the sound won't work for the first period.
And some people will have IP issues where it says you're out of market but actually not.

Yep. Since they joined the NHL.com family of sites it went to ####. I used to be able to watch those games without issue (well, sound issues aside) in Saskatchewan. Up until last year.

Group three is where you go to die obviously.
The top 6 is pretty clear based on camp and last season (Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland, Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik). The more interesting battle is in the bottom 3 lines (Versteeg-Bennett-Foo, Mangiapane-Jankowski-Brouwer, Shinkaruk-Stajan-Lazar).
Looks like Foo, Jankowski, Mangiapane, and Shinkaruk are all being given a fair shot to make the team. But they kept Brouwer in pool A so the simple move is to put Brouwer in Foo's spot and a grinder to Shinkaruk's spot if they don't pan out.
Gives you
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Versteeg-Bennett-Brouwer

"It's hard to get better than that," Gulutzan said. "The biggest thing for me is with 90% of the veteran guys, their numbers are up. And our young players, 90 to 95% of our numbers are up from last year. So that's a good sign. It's safe to say these guys are almost Olympic-trained athletes that train the full year 'round."
|
90%
I count 14 veterans that were in Calgary for fitness testing last year so guessing 2 players are down, and 12 are up.
Would be intrigued to know who the two players are.
Of course they may be down microscopically but it would be somewhat telling.

Those two players could be where they were last year as well, just not "up" from where they were...no?

Jankowski is on this team unless he craps the bed hard. Stajan will be the extra forward and the question mark will be down to Foo, Hamilton, or Hathaway. Shinkaruk is a real long shot IMO. What is really nice about the situation the Flames find themselves is they have quite a few guys pressing for positions and making decisions difficult. First time in a long time that we have seen that.

You see Janko on the 4th line then? Because the top 9 in the post you're quoting seems pretty set.

Shinkaruk has 15 NHL games played and is one of our most experienced prospect. He also requires waivers to go down. Not sure you can categorize him as a long shot. Jankowski doesn't just have to avoid 'crapping the bed hard', he has to earn a spot like every other prospect.
I know the popular opinion is Jankowski/Foo make the team while other guys do not. But popular opinion is wrong just about every season. A prospect is a prospect. Fringe veterans and prospects will all have the opportunity to earn or not earn a spot.
As I said, it looks like Foo, Jankowski, Mangiapane, and Shinkaruk have all earned a serious look. Whether any of them make the team will be determined over the preseasons.
