Should you be in the HOF for longevity? Marleau only scored more than 80 points twice. He was never the best C in the league - I don't think he ever won a major individual award.
Was just going to say this. Outside of games played he never been the best at anything. If he gets in the HOF it will make the Lowe selection look good.

I think longevity combined with consistent production is a valid reason. Add that he is a record holder now. Mike Gartner got in for similar reasons and I thought that was great. I don't think he was ever the best player or won any major awards, but he was super consistent and played 20 seasons. I think he held the record for most 20+ goal seasons or something like that.

It's the hockey hall of fame, not the NHL hall of fame.
2 Olympic golds, a world cup and a world championship... plus all-time leader in games played in the biggest and best professional league in the world. A league in which he also has 1200 points and 560 goals.

No one beside SJ was letting him play and without hitting the games amount no one is talking about him.
Don't see the issue. Marleau was coming off a year where he had 20 points in 58 games with the Sharks. That's not awesome or anything, but it's fine third-line production and he was a decent offensive play driver.
I don't blame the Sharks for wanting to re-sign him for this season, particularly during a retool. His game has taken another couple of steps backward and, as a result, he probably won't get another contract. Such is life in the NHL. I'm sure the milestone helped convince Doug Wilson to re-sign him but it's not like he was coming off a year where he was decidedly not NHL-calibre.

And to anyone saying he doesn't belong in the HHF, its not all about points and goals (24th for all time goals too). This is one accomplishment that should get him in. Heck of a hockey player for a long time too.

Gotta disagree, he hasn't been a good player for a couple years now, Sharks are doing him a favour. A young player should be getting a chance to play in his place. Everyone around him for the record (Howe, Messier, Jagr) were still good players at 40yrs old. Marleau is just taking up space at this point.
I use to attend the swift current hockey camp annually.
The top guy from 96 on was Patrick Marleau.
I had every damn card of his team canada jrs. Laser cut, game worn jerseys ,halo graphs to name it..
In those days The coaches of the camp used the officials room to suit up during these camps. I remember being so scared to asked him to sign these cards every damn year. I rember being so shy to ask him and my dad pushing me like " he won't mind " I was always " yay , he will mind". And every damn year he never had a single problem taking time out to talk and sign them. To boot he would invite me and my dad to have our lunch break with him . Every damn year he had his 2 hour lunch with him.
I have the photos buried somewhere but I'm so happy he made it this far . This dude is unbelievable. I went to that camp for 4 years and he was always such an A one type person .
What a player and what a human .
Congratulations Patrick.

Marc-Andre Fleury earned his 485th career win last night and passed Ed Belfour (484) for fourth place on the NHL’s all-time list.
That seemed to go under the radar - it's a pretty big accomplishment as well.
