That's pretty awesome....especially when you consider what a giant POS the Pony was, even for 80s standards. They sold them here till 1987 (and 1990 overall), but I don't recall seeing any on the road after the early-mid 90s, they rusted away so quick.
I almost bought one as my first car in 1995 for $500. But on inspection, I discovered there wasn't much holding the rust together. It never would have passed inspection.
They were also gutless especially with the automatic transmission. My mom had one and I still remember it struggling to get up that hill on 14th street heading up to SAIT and North Hill mall.
My memories of driving to and through Montreal as a young driver in the mid 1990s usually involved dozens of Ponys (Ponies?) dead on the side of random bridges in Quebec.

Not sure I agree with this - what kind of SUV are you talking about, a stretch Suburban?
Minivans are generally superior to "SUV's" (as in a MDX/Highlander) in terms of cargo space behind the 3rd row... and of the 3rd row itself.
Last gen Sienna had 296 HP I believe... not too shabby, unless you're comparing to the $100K+ SUV market which for sure, will have more hp.
*I want to preface this again by saying I'm only speaking to our particular situation and that I agree a van is more practical for probably >90% of other families out there*
Yeah, I'm talking an extended version of a full size SUV. We need the third row 100% of the time and again, find the width useful. First of all, there are three decent seats across the third row, which helps with capacity (pre-Covid, the whole car would be full several times a week with friends, etc)... The width also helps in minimizing back seat quarles between passengers and for overall comfort for the times adults need to be back there. With the size of our family, there's just more of everything (groceries, luggage, gear, etc), so maximum space is the bare minimum. Believe me, my soul would ache less if the kid mess was in mini van

Ok, it's only 0.6 inches higher but that'll make it that much easier to drive on snowy days. C'mon you know you want one.
I'm actually annoyed by how half-assed this is. Give it a real 2 inch lift, some wheels that aren't all shiny, and... really? You can only get it in black or cement? It's called the "Woodland edition". Offer it in the same army green you can get a Tundra in. And throw in the side moulding option while you're at it.
This should be a no-brainer. These marketing teams are ridiculously bad at what they do.

I think cement looks awesome on that Sienna. I don't love the body lines on the new van, but that colour tones them down some (to my eyes).
They should really do like an A-Team styled van, though. Who wouldn't buy that? Go like 16" deep dish wheels, have some weird pin stripe...maybe even a bikini girl holding a sword airbrushed on. That'd be sick.
What they really need to do, though, is make a weekender camping version. No need for a pop top or anything, but just some screened windows, black-out blinds and a rear seat area that folds down into a bed. And now with all Siennas being hybrid, you'd have a ton of power for some lights, a fan, charge your stuff, etc. without having to plug in so it'd be perfect for boondocking or camping at unserviced sites.

Actually, yes pop top. A Toyota Vanagon? Drool...I'd be the first in line to buy one.

Well, yeah, that would be the absolute best, but I just don't see them putting that kind of investment into it. Plus, it'd jack up the price too much.
If they could just design a seat package where the seats fold down to become the beds they'd be there. Minivans are just begging to be little campers, but you have to totally DIY it to get there.
I drove a mini-van all throughout high school. A 1991 Toyota Previa, and while it was a good enough vehicle. I have some kind of weird thing where I just can't drive a mini-van again. The stigma I suppose, plus I only have 1 kid so a mini-van would be a bit much.
Having said that, that new hybrid Sienna is pretty damn sweet. I'm waiting for a hybrid Tundra for my next vehicle me thinks.
It wouldn't be hard afterall. Turning the 3rd row into a bed. Then, having the two captains seats in the 2nd row make 1 removable and bam, van life storage. Id invest in 9ne of those, sure beats living in a hyundai santa fe !

And add a 180° swivel to both front seats so you can face the back of the cabin. For real you'd have the coolest setup with that.

The problem is that the space with foldable seats is only realistically good for 2 people, so you need the pop top to add 2 more. Minivans are all about families, so having that pop top would be perfect for kids. Yes, it would add to the 5-10K to the cost, but hey, it's the fancy camping version Sienna!
Mercedes is partnering with some outfitters with the Metris to offer pop-tops and kitchens etc...unfortunately with it being Mercedes pricing it gets pretty crazy. Toyota would hopefully be more reasonable.

A buddy in High school had this vehicle. It was a full size, swiveling front seats (i can't actually recall if the driver's swiveled or not), carpeting, bed in the back and bench down one side.
Oh god the things that poor van saw.....

Yeah, you're probably right. Unless they did my A-team bikini girl spec on the exterior to attract young singles or couples to buy the van. You have all these guys with those tents on their roof now...get a van and sleep in it yo.
