Now he has 635. Let's say by the end of this season he will have another 30 goals for a total of 665.
So 894 - 665 = 229 goals behind Gretzky. It is totally doable if Ovi can score an average of just 30 goals for another 7 - 8 seasons, and he always scores at least 30 gaols every season.

He's already got 2 hat tricks in a row. Just 87 more in a row, and he's there. You got this Ovi.

And he was always under 33 years old. best thing to do is re-visit this if and when he has 50 goals to go.

I hope he breaks the record, and I think he can do it

Scoring Winger

Think it depends on his mind set in the future. He has a skill and resilience to do it. But it is possible he will leave to finish his remarkable career in KHL. He has won the cup already and no team is going to pay him as much as they would overseas. But if he decides he wants to break that record, stays healthy and there is no lockout, then brace yourself Gretz, he is coming for you.

I think he'll hit at least 800. It's funny, I thought at one point he wouldn't score 50 in a season again. He came back after that with 3 straight 50 goal seasons. Amazing.

7 more years at an average of 30 (which is far fetched) and he still falls short.
Still a highlight of this generation.

Even a season ago I thought he didn’t stand a chance, now I’m not so sure.

I really hope so. If not, the next person with the best chance has to be Laine.

Assuming no lockouts or serious injuries this is how I could see it playing out to age 40. It's possible but extremely unlikely IMO.
2018-2019: 60
2019-2020: 50
2020-2021: 35
2021-2022: 35
2022-2023: 30
2023-2024: 25
2024-2025: 20
Puts him at 862 (32 shy)

It's still incredible how far ahead Gretzky is compared to his counterparts. Gretzky had 122 playoff goals on top of the 894.
The stat that really got me was this:
-Gretzky scored his first 1,000 points faster (424 games) than any other player in NHL history, and scored a second 1,000 points (point number 1,001 through 2,000) faster (433 games) than any player other than himself.
And of all international players OVI is my favorite

McDavid only needs 696 points in his next 182 games to beat Wayne's record!

Ovi is my favourite non Flame player ever.
But no. The lockouts did him in.
I think he settles in at 800 and is universally considered the greatest goal scorer ever.
When you look at average goals per game in Wayne’s era and the number of 50 goal scorers vs now, Ovi’s goal scoring achievement is even greater.

OVI for sure is the better goal-scorer hands down. Totally different eras. What's crazy about Gretzky is the goals and the blooming assists the killed every single team he played against. It's funny that he's never even really considered a goal scorer.
I'm no fan of Gretzky by the way I'm just putting in the stats up there given how he killed the flames over the years..
I certainly wouldn't mind meeting Paulina though....

The best stat is that Gretzky has more assists then anyone has points.

There are all kinds of Gretzky stats that qualify as maybe the best.
One that I always found entertaining, because early in his career there were lots of doubters and detractors, happened in 81-82, before New Year's, and before his 21st birthday!
Gretzky starts the season with 31 goals in 30 games. And of course there is lots of banter about whether or not he could hit 50 in 50 (Bossy had just become the 2nd player in history to do it, the year before).
So what does he do? He goes on a 7 game goal scoring streak, potting 10 goals, to bring him to 41 goals in 37 games. At this point there is still lots of banter about how he can't keep it up, and he's a flash in the pan, and how sooner or later, some defenseman is going to knock him into next week.
So what does he do? He goes out and pots 4 goals the next night. Then he follows that up by scoring 5 more the next night! to hit 50 in 39 games!!
All in all, a 9-game goal scoring streak, where he score 19 goals, to hit 50 in 39 games. Just ridiculous. That is going to be a tough one to break, but I hope I see it in my lifetime.

IMO I don't think Laine has a chance. He's already well behind OV at the same point in their careers.
After 3 seasons, Laine has seasons of 36, 44 and on pace for 59 goals = 139 goals.
After 3 seasons, OV had seasons of 52, 46, 65 goals = 163 goals.
Already he is behind, and if OV isn't going to make it, neither is Laine. Does Laine have a couple 60 goal seasons in order to make up the difference? OV has 7 50+ goal seasons, and seasons of 46 and 49 goals. I've never believed Laine to be at the same level as OV. Sure he's probably as close as there is these days to being on the same level. But he's still a tier below.
However OV is also on pace to have his best goal scoring season of his career (74). If he can somehow pot 60, and by some miracle (the miracle of miracles) get 70, I think he has a shot. Scoring 60+ would help his case down the road when he starts to slow down.
It doesn't get said enough just how amazing it is to be a hockey fan during this era, and getting to witness IMO the best goal scorer of all time play the game at this level. It's truly special to witness.
