Dion's one of the most overrated players in this team's history. Spent his entire career here next too Hamrlik and a young Gio. As soon as he was asked to carry a pairing in Toronto he fell apart. Pretty much the most "sheltered" defenseman in Flames history, and not even close too top 7 material.

My 3rd vote for Phaneuf and I feel really dirty. Brodie is the far more likeable player but I’m not basing my picks on likability.

How is this even close? Phaneuf had 1, maybe two good seasons. Brodie has been great for close to a decade and will be great for many years to come.

I like Brodie, but the way media close to the flames has been talking about his UFA status, it doesn't feel like the Flames will be bringing him back into the fold. I hope that isn't the case and he is signed to an extension.

Im far from a Dion fan...but thats just not true.

He had 2 really good years and 2 more that were pretty solid, though his coming decline was apparent his last season.

If you had Brodie, Phaneuf, Housley and Macoun, each at the level of play of their best season on the Flames, and had to slot them into a lineup together, Brodie would not be the 1D. Not a chance.

I'm a fan of Brodie, but he's just not the best D remaining.

If you had a choice between an 18 year old
Hamilton
Bouwmeester
Phaneuf
Brodie
Housley
And told me Dion was your pick, I'd question your sanity.

Phil Housley would be the obvious choice at his level of play during his best season on the Flames.

In 2014/2015 Brodie carried the load on the backend when Gio went down. Phaneuf was never even close to the defender Brodie is.

Ditto what JohnnyB said.

Personally, I'm taking Housley over both and Phaneuf over Brodie.

Brodie is not a bonafide PP QB, he isn't the anchor on the PP, and he's not the guy that any NHL team, including the Flames, are picking as their #1D. Being good for a long time isn't the same as being great. At least Housley and Phaneuf were great for a good portion of their 4-5 season tenures with the Flames.

Brodie, Dion lacks the hockey IQ to adjust his game

So glad the Brodie voters showed up, looked like Dion had this early.

For their flames career or total career.

I get the Housley argument but Dion’s time with the flames is just clearly better than the rest of the guys on that list..

I don't remember what happened with Housley with regards to trades and such, but when I look up on HockeyDB, if he was such a great player, why were the Flames able to pick him up on waivers from Washington?

He was a soft defenseman who scored some points for a bad Flames team. He wasn't terrible, but certainly was far from great.

Looks like Brodie wins. The people are never wrong so there’s that. If you’re looking at tenure as an important element, or you just don’t like Phaneuf, I’m a little surprised so many people voted Brodie ahead of Macoun. I vividly recall bemoaning the fact that Risebrough had traded away a legit Canada Cup level defenseman in the Gilmour trade. IIRC Macoun was an extra on the 1991 Canadian team. Macoun was a terrific player who played here a long time.

C'mon now. Dion was worshipped by some because of his early success. If his performance was as dissected as much as Bouwmeester or Hamilton he'd of been the Flames whipping boy for most of his tenure. I clearly remember how many of us (myself included) ignored his defensive gaffes or played them off as nothing more then a young superstar learning the ropes. The amount of excuses thrown his way early on was only matched by the amount of brain dead decisions he consistently made out on the ice. Guy was far below what Bouwmeester, Hamilton, Housley were, wasn't ever close.

I'd take Macoun over Brodie any day of the week

I guess I’m okay with this result. Phaneuf at his best was a high scoring, big hitting, Norris nominee but that can be balanced with his low IQ and unsavoury exit. Brodie may never have been as good or flashy at once but has put together a lengthy and consistently good Flames career.

Also I spent so much time pumping Phaneuf’s tires that I didn’t have a chance to say anything about Housley who I have at #8. I wish he got more support. Despite living in the shadow of the MacInnis trade and being a part of some very disappointing teams he is still 5th all time in Flames D points per game (Phaneuf is 6th, Hamilton 7th, and Gio 8th) while not being as bad in his own zone as some remember.

So do we take Brodie’s legit first and second wins, and call it, or do subsequent runoffs against Macoun and Lousy until voter fatigue sets in and someone else places
