That is definitely something I considered, but I still chose to move Backlund because Ryan, Rittich and Forbort would be UFAs after that season and would give us the cap space required to re-sign Dube, Valimaki and Kylington (again). With knowing the cap will remain the same in 2021-22, it made sense to me to shed the longer term contract.

Yeah, if you win 1st OA and are able to still sign Hall:
1. Draft Lafreniere
2. Trade Bennett for picks (Ottawa seems like a great fit, tons of picks and rebuilding, they can try him at C and open up his ice time)
3. Trade Ryan for picks (Buffalo maybe? Lack of good quality C's and right hand shots, lots of cap space)
Sign Hall - 7 x $8 million
Sign Vatanen - 5 x $5 million
Sign Dell - 1 x $1.5 million
Sign Mangi - 2 x $2 million
Sign Kylington to QO
Sign Gawdin to QO
Sign Rinaldo and Stone to $750k (league minimum)
Don't qualify Janko, re-sign him to $850k
Bring in vets like Ennis, Brassard, etc on PTOs (both guys had 30+ points last season still)
J. Gaudreau - Sean Monahan - Matthew Tkachuk
Taylor Hall - Dillon Dube - Elias Lindholm <- seems weird but give Dube a shot with two strong wingers, one of them a part time C
A. Lafreniere - Mikael Backlund - Andrew Mangiapane
Milan Lucic - Mark Jankowski - Matthew Phillips <- maybe a PTO wins the 4th line C spot
Rinaldo, Gawdin
Mark Giordano - Rasmus Andersson
Noah Hanifin - Sami Vatanen
Jusso Valimaki - Oliver Kylington
Michael Stone
David Rittich
Aaron Dell
$502k cap space left, pretty tight
C is a little scary, but Dube is smart, fast and skilled and can be sheltered with Lindholm on his wing and Backlund spelling him out from time to time. The wings are LOADED.
If after next season you don't think Johnny will re-sign, deal him before his NTC kicks in and hopefully he's just had another 99 point season.

I’d make that trade even if it meant trading Jones for a much better return. Columbus isn’t trading Jones for two years of Johnny.

Dube might be Cirelli good. We need to give him a chance in the top 6 for an extended period. I like that. I don't like the Monahan/Dube combo though, it seems risky. That 3rd line is like another 2nd line though. Trade offs in the salary cap era I suppose. Vatanen is interesting and would be a perfect 4d, but I would actually play him with Gio to give Hanifin the best possible partner.
I wonder what you have to add to Monahan to get a true 1C? I dream of Barzal but we are probably talking Monahan+Hanifin+Pelletier or something. I want a 1c lol.
Gaudreau Barzal Lindholm - 22m
Hall Dube Tkachuk - 16m
Lafreniere Backlund Mangiapane - 9m
Lucic Janko Phillips - 7m
Giordano Vatanen - 12m
Valimaki Andersson - 5.5m
Kylington xxxx - QO + ???
Rittich 2.75m
Dell 1.5m
It's like 77m. Still some wiggle room to pump the D
D and G little scary but we'll be scoring so many goals our guys will get tans from the goal light flashing all the time. At both ends lol.

Yeah I'm really high on Dube. I really hope he gets a real shot here soon. I like that you bring up Cirelli in comparison, because yeah he should be able to succeed like that, he has smarts like Cirelli, and work ethic like Cirelli, but he's a better skater and has also produced more offense than Cirelli at every level....except the NHL so far, but that's because Tampa took him and almost right away started playing him with strong wingers, but they've got such a deep team they're able to do that.

I am not salivating at the lineup, I am salivating at the thought of FINALLY having a PP2 that could work.
I also would rather re-sign Brodie at a 5 x 5 than Vatanen.
PP1
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Giordano - Lindholm
Laf - Backlund - Hall
Hanifin - Andersson
With Ryan, Lucic, Kylington getting some time in if possible.

Buffalo's (Fan 960 comparable) radio guys take on what it would take for Eichel from a bunch of teams:
https://wgr550.radio.com/articles/op...luck-with-that
The majority seem crazy to me, especially when Eichel has given them really no room to work with voicing his displeasure publicly (however they do contend its very unrealistic any team would do this)
Calgary Flames: Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk, first round pick
New Jersey Devils: Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, two first round picks ---- WOW

It's complete idiocy.
There is some sort of aura around Eichel that makes people think he's McDavid or Crosby in his prime.
Eichel is a really good and young 1C, but he has the 18th highest point per game average in the league since he came in. He is not even a top 5 C in the league IMO, probably right around 8 to 10.
Nobody is going to trade two 1st line players plus for him, that'd be stupid. Especially when those 1st line players are 25 and under.

Swap Tkachuk for Gaudreau and add miller from their end and I would make that trade. Sue me.

So, Monahan, Gaudreau for Eichel, Miller?
Or are you still giving them the 1st?
Plus, if you don't sign Hall you're just spinning your wheels.

I see Miller mentioned a lot in Buffalo/Calgary trade scenarios. Am I sleeping on this guy? What am I missing? Hasn't he been a 3rd pairing dman in Buffalo?

Many believe he's been underutilized in Buffalo.
He was playing top 4 (19+ minutes a night) for Vegas for two seasons, including the playoffs (Cup run) and that was obviously a much better team than Buffalo.

He is a 3rd pairing defenceman, maybe a #4.
I chalk it up to us being conditioned into thinking we should be overspending on the bottom half of our defence because it’s what the Flames always do, despite a horrific continued lack of success.
If Buffalo actually would take Monahan and Gaudreau for Eichel, I’d do it. Especially if Hall is signing here and/or Lafreniere lottery has us selecting 1st overall.
You just don’t win cups with the “depth” we currently at have at centre.

I think for most of us we threw him in so Buffalo could have cap space.

I would keep the 1st and even add Hanifin to make the deal.
Flames come out saving cap and can sign Hall. Flames downgrade on the back end but having Eichel, Hall, Tkachuk, Lindholm as your top 4 forwards is insane

Monahan, Gaudreau, and Hanifin (all on bargain contracts) for a single hockey player?!This is absolute insanity.

People must not understand that Gaudreau actually has a touch higher point per game average than Eichel does over the last 5 seasons. But we're going to add Monahan AND Hanifin to Gaudreau to get Eichel??
I know signing Hall would help, but each transaction needs to be done on it's own, and the Flames would be getting raped in that deal.

Time to bust this beauty post from bax again:
Quote:
Between 2016 and 2019 Gaudreau placed 5th in the league amongst forwards in 5 on 5 scoring rate (2.58/60). The top 10 is:
Mcdavid
Kucherov
Marchand
Matthews
Gaudreau
Malkin
Kane
Crosby
Panarin
Guentzal
During the same time period only one player in the entire league was in on a higher percentage of his teams on ice 5 on 5 points and that was Mcdavid.

To be clear I was advocating for Monahan+Gaudreau+1st for Eichel + Miller.
I would rather keep Hanifin myself, but would consider him if the package on their end was upped to Eichel+Montour (or Risto- though I know he is not a darling around here.)
