I put in a bid for Backstrom and Toews. My Backstrom bid was 0.6 x 3 and I felt confident I'd win! His career is likely done I thought but he won't be retiring since he's owed so much money...I thought at least but I could be mistaken.

A low ball on a guy like Backstrom might have worked 2 years ago but I think the bidding strategy has changed since the buyout rule change and teams can now throw lots of money at players close to the end of their careers knowing they won't get penalized when the player retires. I miss the old way tbh but the game evolves and GMs adapt.

We are really happy to have landed Toews as he fits into our 3rd line perfectly.

Ehlers 74 - Lindholm 78 - Svech 74
Schenn 74- Scheifele 76 - Oshie 72
Kapanen 71 - Toews 72 - Dach 71
Comtois 68 - Luostairnen 67 - Peterka 67

I missed out on 2 low ball offers but that was to be expected.

Happy to get Manson. Was hoping to get Brossoit close to minimum, but oh well.

Second place on Anders Lee and didn't throw nearly enough money at Orlov. I thought that there would be more competition for Manson, so didn't even try, so that's sort of a third miss in this batch!

The Toronto Lowballs were surprised to see the dollar amount of some of these offers. Oh well, onto Beeyatch 3!

Happy to add Goligoski, he's a quality veteran offensive D who fits nicely with our group.

Pageau was our #1 forward target since UFA opened so thrilled to add him here. He brings elite / high end FO and DF combined with low 70s in PA and SC. Will likely center our 3rd line but may move up the roster if needed.

Lee completes our top 6 with a 81 sc. May need to add a high pa guy here soon.

Narrowly missed in Brodie and Manson. Looking forward to batch 3!

Really happy to land Orlov. But seems like I could have gotten him way way cheaper. I didn’t expect him to be the biggest overpayment compared to the next bidder, I thought there would be lots of interest.

Bottom line is we are happy to get a top 4 D for 3.47 mill a year after losing out in batch 1.

Actually I think there are fewer huge deals now. Most of the deals are now sub $5M on a per year basis. We used to see 7M+ deals but I think GMs saw that those could really hurt. There are less big ticket offers and less low ball offers. It's now concentrated more in the middle.

The risk now is not that the player retires and you get hit with a buyout (since indeed we did away with that), but now more than the player degrades rating wise and you are stuck with him on a one way deal and you either buy them out and take the hit, or have a high cap player on your roster.

One of my biggest mistakes as a GM was handing Torey Krug $7.35 million per season. Yikes.

I don’t think anyone was even close to that offer.

I remember telling you it was too steep too.

I think mostly the bids are all quite competitive. GM's are being smarter now with their Cheese. Even the deals where a GM wins by a lot, it's for contracts in the 3M to 4M per year, not 7M to 8M.

Looks like everyone assumed, myself included, that he was going to get an offer that we couldn’t beat so decided to pivot to someone else.
