There are different kinds of realism. Fantastic subject matter often requires the most realism of presentation. A portrait of a real person can afford to look like Picasso's breakfast, but if you're going to paint a unicorn, you need to pay attention to the anatomy or the viewer's eye will reject it.

Very true. In the end, I am not a fan of Mike Smith's mask, but it is so, so much better than last year's.

Unicorns don’t exist. You can make the horn as big as you want!

You've just proved that you know nothing about the techniques of fantasy art. I am not an artist myself, but I deal with them for a living, and I know exactly how obsessive they have to be about making their art seem realistic – and the less real the subject matter, the more trouble you have to take.

There is an old saying that comes in an extended version: ‘Truth is stranger than fiction, because fiction has to be plausible.

Violently disagree. I'm in the same camp with Scott Rhodes of bushleaguefactor.com. A logo that features a drawing of an animal wearing hockey equipment is automatically no good. You can just hear the marketing people explaining: ‘Duh, fanz iz teh st00pidz, and they won't know what sport the guys on the ice are playing if we don't put sticks and pucks on the jersey!’

This type of design is so common, and so frequently bad, that Rhodes came up with an acronym to save time in describing it: JACKAL – ‘Just Another Crappy Kartoon Animal Logo’.

The rest of the design is pretty good, but that logo wrecks it. The fact that the coyote looks like it was drawn by Picasso on a bad day doesn't help.

Good point on the logo. It isn’t my favourite either, I just dig this colour scheme.

Yeah, the colour scheme rocks.

It's rather like the Flames' 3rd jersey from a couple of years ago, in that respect. I thought it was a great design, if only it had had the full-sized Flaming C on the front instead of that abomination with the baseball script.

It always bothered me that the coyote in that logo used a player stick and wore a goalie mask.
