question: why does intentional grounding negate a personal foul to the QB?
Intentional grounding is pretty much a sack (there is no concrete yardage on the penalty). So if Newton had taken the sack, he would have gotten a first down.

Denvers D still has it. That might be the best offense we face all season

Great entertainment on game #1, especially the last 10 minutes.
I don't like the NFL kickoffs that just sail thru the endzone. Wasted play. Why don't they fix that by giving the offence a better scrimmage in those situations?

Entertaining game but I'm getting tired of certain teams benefitting from special officiating. I know it comes off as whiny but if the Raiders were the Broncos last night it would have been a flag fest. How do you explain not calling blatant head shots? That one Miller helmet to helmet hit on Newton when he was already wrapped up was as ugly as you will ever see. I get that the Broncos have a great defense but it's time for officiating crews to start calling all teams the same as I would have been fuming last night if I was a Panthers fan as no starting QB should have to take that much of a beating in this day and age.

The non-flags on the multiple helmet to helmets was pretty bad to be sure, but how exactly was Cam allowed to keep playing? He surely was concussed or at the least deserved to go into concussion protocol, yet nothing. NFL keeps becoming more and more like the NBA with the star system. Guessing if it was Blake Bortles in a meaningless game against the Titans he would be automatically in concussion protocol. Also another night of mind boggling clock management by both coaches, extremely poor. Teams need to hire dedicated clock management gurus to aid them, it's pretty embarrassing to watch. And they did "fix" the kickoffs by giving the teams the ball at the 25 now for touchbacks instead of the 20. Truth be told they should just eliminate the kickoff, but at the same time keeping kickoffs isn't about the kickoff, it's about the two extra commercials the TV networks get to show every score.

Part of the problem is the way Newton plays. He leaves himself open to lots of hits by not tossing the ball away, he runs up the middle like a running back, never slides down and gets up chirping every time. So guess what, behave like a running back with a mouth and you are going to get teed off on. Doesn't excuse the two or three blatant had shots but guys there's a reason Rodgers and Brady don't get beat up like that. But, as a Hawks fan, keep it comin Cam, 15 more games like last night will be perfect.

They're trying, they moved it to 25 yards instead it 20 it was in the past.
At this point the team should be given a choice, take the ball at the 25 without the kick or have them kick. Waste of time right now buy kicking it through the endzone.

Some of those headshots on Cam were atrocious. I think the NFL needs to use the NCAA definition of targeting and punish it heavily. The Marshall tackle was ridiculous and should have been grounds for an ejection.
Otherwise it was a pretty exciting season opener. CJ Anderson was a machine out there, as was Denver's O-Line.

Yes, this is the problem. The concussion protocol is not protecting players enough. I think they said last night that it is the team doctor that decides if the player goes back in the game, not the independent doctor.
The Players Union should demand more, but they don't want to be taken out of games.

Yup and also the offsetting penalties rule is dumb. If there one penalty on one side and ten on the other they just replay the down. In the CFL they actually mark off the difference. as it currently stands in the NFL, if you, the defense, know the offense got flagged for illegal formation you can just tee off.

Yeah the Marshall and the Stewart ones were just horrible hits.
The Von Miller one IMO is more incidental contact. Miller was going in for the strip and his facemask his the side of Newton's head. Wasn't like he was leading with the crown of his helmet and driving it through Newton.

They want more touchbacks as the amount of injuries on kick off is huge.
In fact, on a touchback you get the ball at the 25 yard line now. To give teams more incentive to not run the ball out.
Its tough in Denver though because you can kick the ball 80 yards due to altitude.
If they ever go to the "no yards" rule Ill stop watching.

There were no signs the Panthers’ medical staff evaluated Newton after the hit from Stewart or the ATC spotter intervened. Newton was asked “a couple questions, but nothing too serious” after the game, though he said there was too much going through his head to remember what the questions were.
"There was communication between medical personnel on the Carolina sideline, including the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant, and the two independent certified athletic trainer spotters in the booth," the league said in a statement Friday morning. "During stoppage in play while on-field officials were in the process of administrating penalties, the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and team physician requested video from the spotters and reviewed the play. They concluded there were no indications of a concussion that would require further evaluation and the removal of the player from the game."
The players' union, which in July jointly announced with the league potential discipline for teams violating concussion protocol, might have more to say.
"We are reviewing the matter," union spokesman George Atallah told USA TODAY Sports.
