I'd trade Mangiapane today then.

Agreed. He scored on everything in the first half then went cold in the second half of the season. He could certainly get 35 goals again but I am not convinced he's an 80 point player.

It sucks to see the Kings get better. That's a scary team IMO

I think Mang is legitimately a top-60 winger in the NHL today/going forward, and I think he'll "bet on himself" by not signing longterm this summer without a huge deal.
In points per 60 all situations he's 97th in the league for forwards (Johnny is 1st, Chucky is 4th, Fiala is 24th, Lindholm is 56th - so our priorities should be pretty damn clear - we need Johnny and Chucky).
In points per 60 at even strength Mangiapane is 92nd in the league for forwards.
Mangiapane is an absolute beast, and given his minutes have been suppressed to this stage as has his quality of linemates it seems like the smart play to bet on himself in his last RFA year and try to maximize in free agency next year (not a slight at Backs - but most players above Mang are playing with more offensively gifted players as Backs is 247th for ESP/60).
To me, Mangiapane is a great candidate to lock up long-term at like $6M-$6.5M - so above that $5M range of McCann, but giving us a long-term great value contract.

If every team has three first line forwards (so 96 forwards total), that makes Mangiapane a poor first line forward or a good second line forward. I hope the Flames are cautious to invest too much into a player where everything went right for him to start the year. He's not an $8M per year player yet. If he's betting on himself then Mangiapane isn't going to agree to $6M long term - that's not betting on himself. I see him as a player that can drive play but also one who needs the right line mates to actually produce at a high second or first line pace. I suspect that he and the Flames will approach this year cautiously.

I'm not arguing that Mang deserves a contract like this *today*, but that Mang has no reason to sign a long-term deal today when his minutes are being suppressed by playing behind the best LW in the league. If we're going to lock up Mang long-term it's going to have to be closer to Fiala rather than McCann, otherwise Mang will just wait until free agency.

How are Mangiapane’s numbers not closer to McCann’s than Fiala’s? And again, look at a 3 year point production. Fiala has been a consistent guy. And he’s one contract versus a bunch of other comparables.

He’s 22nd in the league for ESG/60 and 21st in the league for G/60.
I have to imagine Mangiapane is going to bet on himself before he locks in on a deal that doesn’t pay him accordingly.

It’s common knowledge among Prefs fans that Fiala was traded for these types of issues. That and the fact that he was like Byron with the breakaways but failure to score.
And very few top line players are traded twice by the age of 25.

Very few top-line players play for a team that is forced to cut its payroll by $13 million from one season to the next.

Hell be a comparable for Boeser as well. Which means Canucks could get slightly less than what Fiala returned since Fiala broke out with 80+ last year. So, lower 1st plus lesser prospect if Canucks want to dump Boeser which has been the rumour now for a long time.

The problem with this is that if you increase his ice time he starts going against better competition and those stats decrease.
I like the player but you trade him if he is asking for something above 6 per season.

It will be interesting to see if Kaprizov is as good without Fiala. They were one of the best pairs of wingers this season.

Are you sure? I don't watch Minnesota, so I can't say I know, but I had both in fantasy and they seemed to stack up points in the same games.

It’s actually only 88 minutes over TWO seasons.

Not exactly.
Flames gave up as much for a Toffoli that takes up a little more than half the cap that Fiala does.
