Judging by the ATL reports last series, this will be a popular move in the Stars' fanbase.

This will make Dallas worse (initially), but also less mind-numblingly frustrating to play against.

I approve.

Dallas fans seemed to be looking at this as the bright side of their first round loss

He is at the end of his contract and if they were going to keep him, they probably would have extended him already, so yeah, no shock. There was also some chatter that being 67, he may just opt to retire. The fact they are making the decision now suggests to me that they may want to get in on Trotz or that maybe Bowness wants to keep working and they are releasing him early so that he can start looking.

He seems pretty young for 67 and I wouldn't be surprised to see him keep going.

I know someone who can handle the stresses of being behind the bench in the Big D...

I thought he did a decent job of coaching the Flames series, outmatched in the end by the limitations of his roster.

Yeah, not really shocking. He and that team were essentially at an impasse in terms of windows and styles.

Reading the ATLs was interesting as fans really didnt like the way Bowness was having the team play, but that to me has always just smacked of 'whiny fans.'

I mean, realistically, what did you want him to do? The Stars do not have the horses to go toe-to-toe with most teams. That is a thin roster with some real high-end talent in some positions that is starting to age, to play a negative game and keep it tight so your talent players can shine and your grit guys just try and keep it even seems like the Go-To Strategy for that group.

Not really surprising but for a guy that could only get another head coach opportunity through being a mid season replacement coach he did a pretty good job all things considered. Hated the way they played the Flames but understood it was the only way the Stars could win the series.

Good coach, took us right to the brink. Hope he’s retiring if he wants, and it’s well earned if so.

They see it as a bonus that he is leaving.

I think it’s time for a complete tear down of the Stars, and their fans were really hard on him all year, but having said that I thought he did a great job in the first round this year. Oettinger was by far the biggest reason Dallas pushed it to 7, but I think some credit needs to go to Bowness for how he had them playing. It was boring and terrible to watch, but it nearly won them the series. He did what he had to to win. Also seems like a really likeable person.
