Also I didn't make an argument that whaling should be uniformly allowed. I suggested that the framework should be based on sustainability and humaneness rather than a moral objection.

I’ve brought it up here too many times already to repost.
It is clear there is no ‘sustainable’ end result to industrial aquatic exploitation. We’ve done a real good job of putting some of the most bountiful fish species into either fully, over, or critically exploited. Facts of the matter are that marine ecosystems are very poorly understood, and continue to face increasingly challenging conditions. Why anyone would support such destructive activity is beyond me, especially when it’s for nothing more than shoving in your mouth and calling it ‘culture’
Imagine drag netting the national parks to hunt squirrels, and the deer and bears caught up were just unfortunate side kills. Then start talking about sustainable deer hunting of those that remain and haven’t yet been hit by cars, starved to death or lost their habitat. It’s absurd.

I oppose whale hunts for the same reason I oppose elephant hunt's, they are too smart. This thing with Japan has been expected National Geographic caught wind s few months ago. Turns out Japan has a whaling lobby that acts a bit like the U.S. gun lobby.

We actually have that here in our forests and it is similar in almost every way to whaling. Trappers set snares and hope to catch a target pray but end up snagging literally everything that happens to enter their traplines. And we justify it by saying the same idiotic crap the Japanese say. It's an important part of our heritage or culture. We have to study these animals. We have to control populations. We use everything we catch. All of it garbage. All of it justification for psychos who like killing stuff.

When you read headlines, it sounds horrific. After reading a few articles, it seems like they are more or less ending the hypocrisy associated with the "scientific research" hunting. The quota for 2019 is 227 whales (Minke) which is less than previous years of research.
The outrage over this reminds me of the outrage over the seal hunt (clubbing technique) a few years ago.

If it was Dolphin hunting and harvesting, people would lose their collective minds. Whales are as intelligent or smarter than Dolphins.

Pigs are pretty smart and we certainly enjoy eating them. Also we still seem pretty okay with the swim with the dolphins trade even after those documentaries on how they are captured.
So I don’t think the moral outrage would exist.

Equally abhorrent to me, although more countries are banning it, is shark-fin harvesting for stupid soup. Both of these need to stop.

Meh....what have whales done for us lately? They're just taking up valuable submerged real-estate...like squatters of the Sea.

it's funny how some creatures are A-ok to slaughter, harvest and eat while others aren't. It's always amusing to see the hypothesis' on why or how come or whatever. And I'm as guilty as everyone else since meat is delicious. Also interesting how much culture drives what people say is okay or not.

They are just competition for fish, so by eliminating them, y'all can have more fish. Until they are gone, too. Hope you like algae blooms!

Harvesting shark fins is abhorrent. I would disagree it's comparable to whale hunting though. As far as I understand, the entire whale is processed and sold. Any kind of killing where you only take a small portion of the animal (fins, tusks, testicles, whatever) is what I take great offense to.

If Humanity is renowned for anything it is for eliminating fishy competition.

We need to stop whale harvesting for now.
In the year 3000 all cars will run on whale oil, so we need to build up the reserves now.
