From Lake Louise you are on the 1A, and it isn't very busy. Plus we saw a couple bears. There isn't a huge shoulder, but it isn't bad. From the 1A turnoff to Banff you have a nice pathway mostly in the trees. You can head into Banff at this point, but we took the faster option on the #1, which isn't great, but it's only for a few km. Then you hit the Legacy which is mostly next to the highway. Obviously it would be better away from it, but it isn't that bad. I ride it probably 20 times a year.

On a weekend like Canada Day they should be charging $20-$50 to park at the lake an offering free transit instead.

I think they will get there. They are building a huge car parking area by the train station, which would get people to leave their cars in Banff, and make charging for parking reasonable. Unfortunately they are also building more parking at Johnson's Canyon, the current lot is still free, and overloaded.

As the crowds grow, they'll definitely need to start integrating shuttle busses more. In the US, parks like Zion do a great job of shuttling around large crowds. Lake Louise, Johnston, and Moraine just can't handle these types of crowds anymore.

Charging an entrance fee to visit the National Park, and then charging a parking fee to park in (portions of) the National Park, would be pretty irksome.

If they provide free parking in Banff, then I don't really agree. The fact is, there are too many vehicles to park at the sites. There aren't a lot of options to fix that, charging for parking is really a reasonable way to do it.

I think they should consider a tiered fee. Keep it lower/free for Alberta residents, and make it higher for out-of-province tourists.

I think incentivizing visiting the other parks would help. Spread the tourists so there isn't that huge concentration that just descends on Banff / LL. There isn't really that big of a requirement for Albertans to have discounted parking in Banff though. I would like to think that most Albertans know there are other places to go besides Banff / LL.

This weekend there was a steady stream of cars going up to lake lousie and sent back down despite the signs saying parking lots were full. People were looking for close, free parking to avoid taking the shuttle. Despite multiple signs stating the lot was full people would chance it and get sent back down.
Since the parks already charge a fee for a shuttle the irksome point as been reached. Instead parking should be priced so that 1 parking spot is always open for whoever is willing to pay and the less convenient service be offered for free.
It also could be limited to 4 spots in the park. The town of Banff, Johnston Canyon, Maligne lake, and lake Louise.

And then tier it again depending on which province they're coming from! Coming from BC or Quebec? Hooooboy....you're gonna have a bad time...

No they get special treatment. Put them on the express train, that just happens to be heading back to their province.
