Should we be going to the Olympics in China?
https://twitter.com/user/status/1359202959813410820
For me, I'd feel bad for the athletes, but I honestly think with China holding two Canadian hostages for more then 2 years, the actions in Hong King, And the genocide and concentration camps for the Uyghurs, there's no way that Canada or any Western world nation should attend. Maybe this is the only way the slap the CCP in the face.
Athletics needs to take a back seat.

Isn't Tokyo about to cancel theirs too?
Could be no Olympics for a while if we also skip China.
That being said, I'd be strongly in favour of cancelling both.

Canada absolutely should not go. And if they go NHLers should absolutely not go. Let's just all meet in Paris and Milan once everything is better again.

I mean they're basically trying to eradicate these people. Olympics should be a 100% no go, but they're a big powerful country. If this was a non superpower country doing this, the world would come down on them.

Tokyo should just push it another year to 2022 rather than outright cancelling it. They've put down too much money to just cancel it just cause. Two years break between summers, and doing it the same year as winters, is fine.
China should be globally pressured by major countries by boycotting to send a message, but I don't think this is getting that much attention in the mainstream media for countries to make that big of a move that will piss off China. It sucks, but the politics and economic recourse will likely keep all major countries quiet on this front instead of taking a stand.

I saw an interview with Dick Pound the other day on CBC where they discussed whether or not Canada should boycott. He made some very interesting and good points on why the athletes should not be penalized by a political decision aimed at a foreign super power. Basically a lot of it came down to the fact that if the government wants to stand up and penalize China they have better and stronger options through sanctions and other measures. He also said that the athletes are invited to the Olympics by the IOC which in general is apolitical.

Dick Pound also argues that Olympic athletes should get priority access to the Covid-19 vaccine. So IMO he can Pound sand!

I feel bad for the athletes that have been training for the Olympics, but there are bigger things at stake for Tokyo and Beijing.

I feel bad for the athletes, but would hope that they would say no. The Olympics are the one area where you have an opportunity in a high profile event to take a solid stand. Canada with the two Michaels and the genocide should be leading the way in terms of a boycott.
The only other thing would be for Canada showing up wearing anti-genocide shirts and waiving "Free the Michael flags"

China has been a despicable #### home for a long time, we should have gone to the last Olympics in China.
People are fine with boycotting if it doesn't cost them anything personally.
Just look to our rampant consumption of cheaply made consumer items out of China.
The West has funded and facilitated China.

And what would it actually accomplish?
Yes in theory they should boycott China....in every thing. The Olympics though? Not if they are business as usual in a hundred other areas.
So you rip away the hard work and sacrifice of the athletes, most of whom continue their disciplines strictly for a chance to compete in an Olympic games. What have you actually done?
On the international stage, Canada taking a stand means squat. Nothing.
So unless its a coalition of countries, no Canada should not be boycotting. If there is a real effort to pressure China and you can get the democracies of the world to work together on this, then sure.

IMO governments that are elected to make difficult decisions and if they want to make a political stand against China then do so with sanctions but don't take the easy out and screw over the athletes that dedicate their lives to competing in the Olympics.

Everyone who boycotts can just have another olympics elsewhere. Problem solved, no athletes get "screwed" over.
Plus, what kind of awful POS of a human do you have to be to feel like your ability to win a gold medal is worth genocide?
Are all olympic athletes also narcissistic psychopaths?

So...just that i understand your "argument".
Athletes that go to the pinnacle event of their lifetime of work and training...are "POS humans" because the country that hosts that event (as chosen by others that the athletes have no say in) is a country that acts despicable?
Ridiculous. The only ones this hurts are the athletes. Full stop.
Again, simple question.
Canada boycotts China games,
What does that actually do to stop the genocide?
And no, they cant just have "another Olympics" elsewhere. The entire goal of the athletes is to compete against the others from around the entire world which isnt possible should a bunch of countries attend one or the other.
We need to look back no further than the 1980's to see what that accomplished.

For the athletes participating in this type of demonstration it would probably be a quick and easy way of getting locked up.

Boycotting the Olympics is an empty gesture so I don't agree with it.
If people actually care convince the Government to take real steps. Not just punish the athletes for things totally out of their control.
