Hockey totally has a big luck factor involved but if you are a great team you should be able to overcome bad bounces in a 7 game series.
Hockey just shoots itself in the foot all the time. The way the game is called in the regular season and in the playoffs. No penalties in the last 2 games is crazy.

The last 6 President's Trophy winners have failed to get out of the 2nd round. The last 8 have failed to get out of the 3rd round. That's not good. Last team to make the final were the 2013 Blackhawks who lifted the Cup. And there was one year in the west the 5-8 seeds all won.

Upsets once in awhile are fun but they lose value if too common. What fan wants to invest years and money into a good team than see them lose early all the time? You need the David vs. Golliah factor for drama. Imagine if Steph Curry's Golden State Warriors put up 65-70 win seasons every year and never made it past the 2nd round? That team single-handedly brought basketball back.

Basketball is no good. I think I've heard more crying from the NBA than most funerals.

Having great teams is good for the sport. But everyone complained about the NBA and the super teams made things a foregone conclusion.

The Lightning sure seem like a top team to me. President Trophy, Stanley Cup, they've done it all.

Sure, there can be overkill. Golden State making 5 finals in a row is probably too much. Although those Cavs-Warriors Finals got huge ratings.

But if this iteration of the Colorado Avalanche, who we all agree is amazing, can never make it past the 2nd round, that's a problem. I'm not saying they need to win every year, but they should be in a conference final or a Stanley cup final and battle with another great team, like Tampa. I mean, we're not asking the league to rig it, just call the game properly.

I hear what you're saying. But the Avs losing is not in itself a problem. If you're saying that hockey is too evenly matched, and the playoff results too random so as not to reward the best teams, there is some truth to that.

But I think you also have to acknowledge that there are consistently top teams in hockey that have playoff success. Sure the Blues snuck in there (a la the Raptors) but the last decade is littered with great teams and repeating champions.

Maybe Vegas is just better than the Avs? 3 conference finals in 4 years would indicate they are an excellent team.

Personally I'd say the bigger issue is that the players on most of these teams are far too anonymous. Fans got riled up over Curry, Durant, James etc. playing on these super teams. Great players like Stone and Pietrangelo are utterly anonymous, even hard core hockey fans wouldn't recognoize them on the street. So it's pretty hard to have strong feelings about these teams for the average Joe.

I don't know that hockey is that evenly matched. But the playoffs make it more even by not calling penalties and keeping the less skilled team closer. I think even if you threw Ottawa into a playoff series, they'd grab their way to a couple of wins.

Vegas tied the Avs for points this year, in the same division, and were dead even with them head to head with a one goal differential in those 8 games. Vegas only had a losing record against Minnie. And they play a heavy defensive style, so no one should be shocked that they beat the Avs. It’s just one of those years when two great teams meet before the finals.

ETA: Hockey players are anonymous though I probably would recognize Stone’s mug outside the arena.

I agree with what GirlySports is saying about the lack of penalty calls in the playoffs making it easier for less skilled teams to stage upsets. If we prefer playoff style hockey, and it’s only made possible by having the refs only call egregious fouls, then that’s the way they should referee regular season games too.
