The question for players like me is "Is this game enjoyable enough to keep me hooked until this point in time."
I can only lose so many games getting gold medals for objective kills and objective time. It isn't fun knowing no matter what you do, unless you can convince five people you've never met before to try and play the game the way the devs designed it and work together, you're going to lose. I don't have the patience for that sort of thing anymore. I am sure I'd feel the same way about LoL if I was just starting to play it now though.

I'm a total newbie to the game, I pretty much only use solider 76, junk rat or pharah.
I sometimes play with friends but I really should learn how to play more guys (Reinhardt or Zarya, mercy or Lucio) I'm only level 28 I think haha. Majority of my friends are in the upper half of the 50s some are 'prestiged' already and lapping me in levels haha. It is fun to play with friends though.
I did try rank with them, currently 3-4. 3 more placement matches to go.

So, after playing around in Competitive some more...it's painfully obvious the difference between even a PUG with 1-2 people voice coordinating and a team that doesn't' talk at all. Teamed up with a buddy of mine who's always been good at coordinating, and it made a huge difference, even with just him on a mic.

Yup you can tell by the way the team plays as well if they can 'follow instructions'.
I ended up finishing 4-6 for placements and got 41 rank or pts whatever they use.
Played a few games with random pugs and it wasn't too bad. In the 3 games I played (all wins) we had 1 guy step up and lead. He would ask for certain classes, people would oblige pick what he asked and played as a team. Worked together. Was awesome.
On one map (had to search it up.) Gibraltar we crushed them on the escorts part. Time to defend we did not bad but they got a couple triple or quadra kills on us and pushed all the way to the end. We managed to fight them off with 3 metres to spare at about 6 minutes left. Someone stepped up and talked on Mic, gave some directions we worked together and managed to win that one. Felt nice!
Now I'm at 44 - after typing this up I think I will play a few games tonight. Haha. I do enjoy the massive amount of experience gain in competitive games though.
Anyways if anyone in PC wants to play sometime lmk, we can add each other on bnet.

I thought about that too, until I realized a single Competitive match is roughly 2 Quick Play matches, so the xp balances out whichever of the pair you are playing.

Feels like Quick Play has become a bit more random since people left for Competitive - which suits me just fine.
Stupid weekly brawl is messing with me though. Pharah with unlimited jump is great... until you go back to QP and try that same trick before getting shot down by Bastion while not flying the second time.

Had a really disheartening day.
Placed at rank 43 - like many of you just the difference between people that talk on mic and people that don't are just drastic.
Had 6 bad games in a row, de-ranked to rank 39. Fine, no problem just a bad streak.
Then played a game which was a nailbitingly close capture point game. Finally pulled off the win, but someone on the other team left with about 30 seconds left. Because of that, the game considered us winning a 6v5, and I gained maybe 10% of a rank.
After the entire day of losing 75-80% of a rank for each loss, and gaining 10% of a rank because someone on the other team rage quit just tilted me so hard. I'll probably get back on the grind, but it left a really really sour taste in my mouth.

Nothing wrong with playing those 3. They are a significant part of a balanced team.

I switched 'roles' for a bit.
Saturday night I played 3 or 4 games with my friends who are all ranked 50+ (stupid idea)
I really dragged them down because I wasn't able to kill or fight other guys as well as my teammates. Lost every game. Went down to rank 39. Haha.
So yesterday I played about 6 games. Switched to a more tank role. Played Zarya all day got 6 wins in a row. (I think the wins were more based on teamwork and playing ppl I can keep up with for now.)
I really like her. By engaging at right time and using the barrier correctly I was able to fight and defend.

I love this...Win a competitive match, and gain maybe 1/4 of an inch of a level. LOSE one...and lose 3/4 of a level. >.<

Haven't been doing competitive matches yet. It is frustrating when everyone is on their own agenda. I played the most frustrating game so far last night. We are on attack and we have 2 Hanzo's and a Bastion. I was solider 76 and there was another solider 76. I switched to reinhart to push but got no where because everyone was sitting in the back.

It's the biggest complaint right now. That and length vs quick play.
It's their first season, so they get some leeway but Blizzard has done ladders before so it's confusing that they managed the bungle this. Not quite a simple, obvious ladder that you see in Starcraft, WoW Arena or HotS, not quite the one for one you see in Hearthstone. It ends up taking the worst from both, which is a problem. I think the issue is once again they don't know what they want the game to be. Something that is to become an e-sport or something for fun with friends. They've done this with their last three major releases and it is pretty frustrating because the game suffers for it.
It's shocking that the game launched so smoothly and then ran into issues a month in with a competitive release. Usually the other way around for games.

NM, apparently one of the things that was really GMG about CP was determined to be a bug and has been fixed

My only advice is to avoid solo queue in competitive if you want to keep your sanity. It's a coin toss to see whether you have a competent team that uses their microphones and works as a team or just a bunch of teammates calling each other ####lords and getting steamrolled.
I got rank 56 after placement matches and dropped down to 50 in a blink before I started to only queue in a group of at least 3 and have since managed to climb up pretty high.
From my observation there's a pretty stark difference in the players between high 40s/low 50s and low 60s and above IMO. People tend to forget about the objectives, don't use their microphones, don't switch heroes when the team composition is countered or their aim/reflexes just aren't up to snuff in the lower rankings. The opposite is true for the 60+. I found "ELO hell" is mid 50s because you end up getting a mix bag of both.

I placed 50, and got bumped down to 46 in my first few games, but I've managed to crawl my way back up to 52. I feel like the player base has dithered out enough now that it's placing me with capable team mates. The toxicity of the players has also severely dropped off, which is nice.
My only gripe is sudden death. Do away with that and give the win to whoever completes the objectives the fastest during regular play.

So I noticed that your team can win by distance now in competitive. I was taken aback when my team won earlier today. Both teams pushed the payload to the same checkpoint but we were given the victory since we pushed it further.

Spotted this on the Overwatch twitter feed. A potential new weapon for Mercy coming soon? One of the canisters looks like the kind that Soldier 76 deploys...

That's for the new class that Blizzard will be releasing, a support sniper that can heal at long ranges

I finished my placement matches finally and got rank 53. I'm going to assume that is a fairly average placement if they are saying pro's should be rank 99.
