Discount on Canadian crude highest since 2013. Will make it tougher in an already tough market.

I mean, he's not wrong.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great crossover post between this and the circumcision thread, though.

We've been suckered like fools by the U.S. and unfortunately have fallen for it. There's no doubt that the U.S. has quietly invested in lobbyist groups whose goal is to divide Canadians about the merits and environmental impact of large projects.

And the sad thing is, the small and vocal minority that have fallen for it are the ones that are doing damage to this country, with their ability to ensure that large projects are stuck in bureaucratic and legal purgatory.

Meanwhile, the U.S. energy sector is going gangbusters. We once had a promising hope of having an LNG sector, but have had projects sidelined while the U.S. continues to expand.

As someone who lived in Alberta until recently and now lives in the U.S. (NYC), it's very frustrating to see how this has happened over time, and how there's so many inept Canadians who are oblivious to the truly long term consequences this will have.

Figured I'd move this here since the Canadian Politics thread was getting derailed.

Building a full upgrader wouldn't fix the problem, 1 barrel of bitumen plus natural gas to upgrade it nets 1.2 barrels of light oil.
Sorry, I don't follow you here. A carbon-removal upgrader (e.g. Suncor/Syncrude/CNRL) still removes 20% of the bitumen barrel through petroleum coke so they would still provide that benefit. And not sure where the natural gas fits in? I mean, sure, they do run on NG but it all goes to heat and, while it does travel on a pipeline, nat gas pipelines obviously can't be used for oil.

Sorry, I know you know this world so I must be missing something.

I was assuming hydroconversion where the heavy bottom is converted from petcoke into fuel oil. The addition of hydrogen from NG and butane pushes the yield up. My 20% is wrong for SCO from the names you gave, they yield 85% or so, that should really only apply to final products. 1 barrel of bitumen converts to 1.2 barrels of diesel, gas ect.

Ah gotcha. You were basing it on Shell's hydrogen adding process (whatever its called).

CPG's new boss announced he's going to wack 17% of their people. The rest of Canada shrugs or actively cheers.

As someone who's generally drifted back and forth between the two major federal parties, and probably identifies most as a "red tory" It's becoming difficult to not be very angry at Alberta and Saskatchewan's position in confederation. The political backflips being done to save "family dairy farms" in Eastern Canada while auto manufacturers and Quebec industries bear no burdens to account for the downstream emissions of their industries does not square very well with the state of political interference in the energy sector.

I just have no idea where we go from here. So discouraging.

We knew going in that the Federal Liberals were going to dig their heels in with Dairy because there's a Quebec election coming up and the Liberals in Quebec are going to lose it and the incoming government will join Alberta, Saskatchewan, a couple of maritime provinces and possibly Manitoba in fighting the Federal Climate Plan. We also know that Ontario Manufacturing will be treated with kids gloves by all parties because its the seat of power in Canadian Elections.

All the federal parties are doing this, not just the Liberals. I guess the only one that isn't is whatever Maxime Bernier calls his party.

Yeah, your right and its a position that I disagree with no matter what the party.

I have never heard of Eagle Spirit Energy before and do not work in O&G. For those that know more about the industry than I do could this work?. They are talking about building 4 pipelines from Alberta to B.C. coast in same corridor 2 oil 2 LNG. Want to move 2 million barrels of oil a day. Cost estimate is $12 billion. They would need the federal government to repeal the tanker ban Trudeau put in place.
