I took a subscription, but if I see one more article about Troy Brouwer from Wilson I will strongly reconsider.

So based on rough numbers and a $50/year subscription (ignoring the discount), that's $5M of annual revenue. Pretty impressive for a sports content company started last year.

I'm pretty sure that's just their twitter follower counts at that moment, not subscriptions.

If The Athletic is going to give Calgary readers other content beyond the Flames then they would be wise to hire Vicki Hall, if she's agreeable to joining. She knows the CFL and can do all other coverage, like winter sports.
The question is does Toronto-based The Athletic care about the same things that sports fans in Calgary do? Will they cover the CFL? The NLL?

I know for sure they want to cover the CFL but they won't be doing any articles this season as it is too far in. Their focus on Athletic Canada is just hockey for now, and they'll add to the staff at a later date.

This thread convinced me to give it a shot. I got in at the 50% promo. CP should get a royalty.

Only 621 subscribers here, CP actually probably does make a statistically significant portion of their base, lol.

Good times.
As much as that was ridiculous, because he tried to massage stats to fit his conclusion rather than use his stats to draw a conclusion, I don't actually mind the general idea of trying to look at at things in a different fashion and try to challenge conventional thought.

The problem, really, is that Mudcrutch's writing is generally poor, and he's going to get badly exposed having his work put up alongside the likes of Duhatschek, LeBrun and Rosenthal. Likewise our own Kent Wilson. Others have made note of his obsession with Brouwer. That's fine - if a little irritating - when it's FlamesNation or these forums. But the Athletic is a professional endeavour. It's time to move on from that style of writing.

The thing has been opened for less than a week and he's written 1 article. Probably fair to give it a chance.

And I have and I will. But god damn, did his very first article really have to be yet another Troy Brouwer complaintfest? On the same day the rookie tournament started? Was that really the most important Flames topic of the day?

Just signed up. Thanks for the 50% off. I hope they have a "No Francis Guarantee", or I will not be happy.

Maybe I'm weird, but I prefer these articles over the puff piece Willis gave to Oilers fans comparing Yamamoto to Gaudreau and Johnson that added absolutely nothing of value.

I think they just wanted some Flames related content to go up quick so he rehashed one of his FN articles. Don't think its part of a big witch hunt necessarily.

Like good design, good journalism has value and should be supported. I've added this to my collection of WaPo, NYT, FT, WSJ, Globe, and the Economist. At $50 for one year, its worth the price.

Good interview with Patches on there right now. Sounds like him and Drouin are good friends now which has got to make Montreal fans happy. I think Drouin is going to have a huge season this year.

So Willis had a puff piece. No surprise. How does that make Wilson's obsessive drivel any better? There was nothing of value in it either.

"Hey, it isn't a puff piece' is not an argument to justify spending money on a bad article.

Right on cue, today's subject: Don't worry guys, Lucic is totally going to be better this season.
