I think the issue I have with Wilson on The Athletic is that he’s a terrible writer.

Okay, let me rephrase that, he’s a terrible storyteller. His articles are like a position paper or something from a scientific journal. The articles aren’t interesting to me. They’re full of data, but there’s no eloquence to the delivery, no reason for me to want to read it unless I’m interested in doing some math.

Guys like Duha, or George Johnson, etc.. they know how to tell a story.

If this is all that the Athletic in Calgary is going to deliver, it’s pretty disappointing.

I'm likely to cancel too.

Does anyone know how cancellation works if you've paid for a year? Do they credit you back? Or does your account just stay active till the renew date?

I just cancelled. Looks like my account is active until my next renewal date in September of next year.

I've paid upfront for the year so for the price (50% off), I'm inclined to see it out and give it a longer shot.

I’ll continue to pay just Justin Bourne’s stuff. It’s awesome. And I like reading about other teams.

I wasnt expecting much in the way of flames coverage as Wilson does nothing for me. The flames themselves and Haynes do by far the best job of covering the locals, for my taste anyway.

Bourne is excellent. Makes me want to ghostwrite for him sometimes, but I lack the tools and technical knowledge, on top of all the hockey experience he brings.

Yeah, this appears to be accurate. I cancelled and still have access.

For me, I expected Kent to be rather wooden, and Duha to be the storyteller. It's actually good to have a variety of styles. It's the general lack of coverage that is irritating. They really need to hire a few more writers so that we aren't going days between content. Especially since we aren't the only team getting poor coverage.

Which is huge considering people are pretty high on Fox.

Fox is intriguing but he's an unorthodox prospect/defenceman which puts him behind. Valimaki is a prototypical D in the NHL mold. Big, skate-y, wicked shot, possession player. Completely possible for Fox to end up the better player but at this point, you have to take Valimaki because of the tools.

Coyotes GM, John Chayka, was on The Athletic's podcast for an hour today. I know he isn't very popular, but I always enjoy hearing Hockey Operations people talk in settings like that.

After a few days of no content, there's been a steadier trickle of Flames news starting with that Valimaki article. Wilson (prospect update), Duhatschek (Gaudreau feature), and Bourne (video coaching featuring Tkachuk burning Sid) all chipped in.

I'm sure not many of you care about the San Francisco Giants, but The Athletic has hired Andrew Baggarly to cover them. Baggs is a phenomenal writer. He has two books, A Band of Misfits: Tales of the 2010 San Francisco Giants and Giants Splash: Bondsian Blasts, World Series Parades, and Other Thrilling Moments by the Bay, which are personal favourite of mine. I don't follow many writers, but this one is top notch. If the rest of the guys they are hiring are even near his level, they've done well.

And then since then just a trickle.

I've been checking in on the app, and for the sporadic content and empty post game report cards for Calgary... I'll wait until this is on par with other areas they ask the same money for.

No question they provide better value to other markets.
