Wasn't Burke GM when Ron Wilson was kept on as Leafs coach even though players didn't seem to be buying in at the time? Hard to say but I hope BT considers a coaching change for the sake of the program. Overcooking may be good for prospects but GG just didn't seem to have this group prepared to play important games.

The Jets also got Laine the year they were bad, who has 79 goals as a 19 year old. Adding a 40+ pure goal scorer for nothing tends to help. The Flames traded all their picks away, meaning they will not be better in any way next year talent wise.

I was surprised to see that in the last 12 seasons, he has made playoffs twice and only once got out of the first round. Is Paul Maurice an elite coach or has the addition and experience of a top player in the league with an already strong roster been the difference this year?

I’ve never seen anyone who doesn’t understand this. Not on CP or from the Flames organization. It’s asinine to suggest that anyone, anywhere has ever claimed that having good advanced stats drives good play and not the other way around.

Quick Q: Has Brodie ever said he prefers to play the right side or have Flames fans always just assumed that since it's where it appeared to perform better? Was trying to find a news article or interview where he said that but couldn't find that.
Personally I think that d-partner (Gio vs. others) and coaching style (Hartley's style magnified his strengths) are the bigger reasons for his change in quality of play but just wondering if he's ever said he prefers the right side.
And a follow up - if he's said he prefers the RH side to management then I blame Treliving more than GG for his utilization. He went and added Stone, Hamilton, Hamonic, plus we had Andersson and Fox in the system. Really there is no chance for Brodie to play his RH side because that would have screwed up the position for the rest of the players that GG has on the roster.
IMO that would make that Hamonic acquisition even worse...because if Brodie told Treliving he prefered the RH side then the focus really should have been a LH d-man to pair with him or Hamilton.

Hellebuyck's emergence as a steady, star goalie has also played a huge role. He wasn't nearly as good last year.

They got a potential 50 goal scorer on the roster and good goaltending.

Let's sit back and see what coaches are fired and go from there aka Quenville ( can't spell his name)

Trotz seems like a weird case. He is generally regarded as one of the top coaches in the game. Or one of the better ones anyway.
But he really hasn't had a ton of playoff success. Especially in Washington.
But I would do cartwheels if he would come here.

I've started to get a sinking pit in my stomach lately, with all the media attention suggesting that maybe Gulutzan will be back next year.
I have never contemplated outright boycotting Flames hockey but I think that would be it for me. I could never get on board with watching another season of this garbage. Even if through some miracle massive improvements are made to the roster with basically zero trade currency left to leverage, I have no doubt it would all go to waste in a series of baffling in-game decisions that have become the unfortunate hallmark of this staff.

Re: Trotz
Over the past 9 years his teams have missed the playoffs 3 times and when they did make it they went to Round 2. Not a ton of success, but consistency is there. The Flames have been to the 2nd round once in the past decade and have missed 7 times.
I'll take it.

My hope is that they fire him and actually spend real cash on a new - proven - coach.
My fear is they won't, and GG will be back behind the bench mollycoddling the players and looking desperately at his iPad and combing his hair next year. And we'll get the same crappy play we did this year, regardless of whether Tre goes and gets Tavares (or anyone else for that matter).
I have a hard time believing that Murray "Let the taxpayers pay for an arena" Edwards will spend anything like what is necessary to bring a quality coaching staff in.
My sense is that the Flames' management are just unwilling to let the "process" go, and spend WAY too much time thinking to get the job done properly. Just like the players on the ice. Starts at the top, goes to the bottom.
I hope I'm wrong.
