This video gives a decent explanation of what may have happened. Check out the rest of his channel while you're at it.

NSFW due to language.

Jesus. That inattentive driver in the left turn lane. If he was paying attention, he would have been right under it when it went down. Would be ironic if he was texting at the time, and that saved his life.

Amazing that every event that occurs these days is caught on camera. I'm sure this video will be invaluable to the investigation.

It looks like it broke right where the crane is where they are working. I wonder if they managed to cause it, rather than a defect in the design?

Here's a better version of the dashcam video:

I'm not sure why they didn't edit out the first 2 and a half minutes where it's just sitting in the yard. You can skip to the 2:40 mark when the truck turns onto the road. Also, it's shot at a very low frame rate, so it looks much closer to real speed (but still a little fast) if you play it back at 0.25 speed.

The follow up video with our fellow Canadian AVE sheds more light on the matter. Looks like a contractor kept tensioning one of the cable rods to failure while traffic was still live.

Yikes that school bus being 15 seconds behind in right lane.
