Yeah if that forward had been a Flame in an NHL game I’d want a penalty for that hit.

Both true statements. But the forward should do more to protect himself i.e.: not turn his back, because the d-man has already committed to a check. If he didn't turn, it would have been a clean legal check to separate the man from puck, and not some bonecrushing hit.

Not that this is necessarily related to the penalty but Valimaki's toughness and mean streak are qualities that aren't often mentioned about him. I still remember him pissing off half the World Juniors players his last time there; he was by far the peskiest Fin and was an outright physical bully at times.

He reminds me a lot of Andersson in this regard. I wonder if we'll see this element of his game emerge in the NHL as his confidence continues to grow. The physical maturation is already there - I met him while he was rehabbing his most recent injury and he still looked physically imposing while presumably working out less.

The open ice hit in that Colorado game says everything you would want to know about Valimakis physical game.
That hit was so good James Neal scored.

I'm genuinely excited to see him back in the line up if we ever get to watch the Flames any time soon.

If Valimaki can bring the toughness of a certain former Flame packaged with the ability to play high level hockey, this will be a franchise changing win for the Flames:

One of my favourite moments of the 04 run was watching a game in my house with my older brothers friends and one of them yelling “Smile him down, Ville!” At the screen.

No Flame who contributed 16 total points has ever been more beloved.

Brian McGrattan, and his 15 points in 137 games, says 'hi'.

But your point still stands.

What’s crazy about his 8 playoff points is I can almost recount and replay in my head every single one.

I’m going to try now, even though it’s been a decade since I last thought about it.

I believe he had 4 goals, 4 assists that playoff run.

Goals.
The outwaiting Cujo in tight for our second in 18 seconds against Wings.
The no look shot on a two on one, against the Sharks I believe.

Assists
The spinorama assist to give Chris Clarke a tap to tie game 6 against TB.
The one touch tap back pass to a streaking Donovan for a breakaway goal against Sharks.

Oh another goal, he like took it from the boards near the blueline, and like drove the net from the outside, protected the puck and pulled it across the crease with him to tuck it around the goalie. Forget who that was against.

And not a point, but of course he took out cujo at the end of game 4 to earn a game suspension but get in the heads of the Wings.

So I can still recall 5, but I know for a while I could recount all 8, they were all memorable in some way.

He was one hell of a player.

Back to Välimäki related news, seven liiga teams have postponed games due increased numbers in corona cases in their areas.

Ilves has postponed all home games until the 18th of December.

Obviously the situation is developing.

So, the current development is that all of SM-liiga is going on a break at least until Christmas.

Juuso finished his Liiga-stint with 2+17=19pts in 19 games played. He told today on radio, that he's traveling back to Calgary this weekend.

For a full year that is an NHLe of 37 points. Based on 70 games prorated to a full season that is just under 32 points last season which fits in the range with the D below:

Sergachev, Shattenkirk, Girard, Ekholm, Risto, Edler, Nurse, McAvoy, Severson, OEL.

and he'll be a rookie in the 2020/2021 season .

I was always pretty openly critical of Tree around the Mark Stone trade discussion. To take the stand that you weren't going to include Valimaki, you better be damns sure that he is what you think he is.

...it appears that he was what they thought he was, and Tree was bang on.

2nd overall in assists and tied for 5th overall in points. 5th overall in ice time per game.

----------

Meanwhile, Puljujärvi had 12 points in 16 games, which is tied for 46th overall.

Probably more important, that is a around the production what we expected from Brodie. Granted the 19 points Brodie put up was a very down year, if Valimaki has a floor approaching 30 points, everything will turn up Milhouse.

One reason why that likely isn't his floor is that NHLe assumes that the player would have the same role in the higher league - although Vali won't be playing top pair minutes I think he will be pushing for a top 4 spot by year-end.

I am personally hoping to see pairs balanced like this:

Hanifin-Andersson (~21 minutes)
Valimaki-Tanev (~20 minutes)
Giordano-Nesterov (~19 minutes)

So IMO he could get similar minutes. The big question is if he will get some PP time. I hope so, he has a shot that we sorely lack from back there.
