From McKnight
To our McKnight families,
It has been a while and we had hoped for better news to communicate, but yesterday Hockey Alberta announced the immediate conclusion of our traditional 2020-21 season.
What does this mean? Our season is concluded, but hockey is not cancelled for as long as the Alberta Government health regulations allow us on the ice. We, McKnight, are exploring opportunities for our families to have on ice experiences such as one-on-one instruction (as early as Monday). Hockey Calgary is also working with the community associations to figure out affordable spring hockey options during March and April. We might be disappointed in the announcement, but we respect the difficult decisions that have to be made in the best interest of all our players, families and community. We are optimistic that this new approach will serve the interests of all our families.
Refunds are a hot topic, and we can confirm that a refund will be provided. Over the next few weeks, we will be working with our teams, internal and external, to figure out the details regarding McKnight refunds. We will continue to share details as they come available and we hope to have an update regarding amounts by the end of the month.
Hockey is more than just what happens on the ice, it is about community and family. Our community is resilient and our Hockey Family is strong. We may be missing out on a few on-ice memories this year, but take solace in knowing that you are creating life-long memories with your family tucked away safely at home.
Watch for future communications on refunds and spring options. We will share all information as it comes available.

Hockey Calgary has made it official. Season formally cancelled with refund info to follow from the associations. Spring programming will be opt-in and revisited when allowed.

I just wanted to say that most people involved in minor hockey are volunteers, I thought it all went pretty well considering the circumstances. These people have jobs, families, and their own stuff going on too.
Our association did confirm yesterday that the season is over, there will be refunds, more to come.

Its funny on the football side the effect of Covid on things like fund raising and fees. I expect things are going to be really tight for a lot of amateur sports teams for a good long while.

Our association allegedly pays some ####### $100,000, who BTW is still employed.
I have sat on boards for sporting associations. There is lots of work even in smooth normal times, don't like it don't volunteer.

Are non profit associations (like MHA's) eligible for the wage subsidy programs the Feds have brought in? I genuinely don't know the answer to that. Do they meet the criteria?

I have no idea, but part of this individual's job is to work with the association coaches.
I mean there is a tonne to unpack about this person, how he uses the association data base to run a separate for profit business.
I am interested to see how each association approaches the refunds.
For example, my boy is 2nd year bantam, they had 5 weeks of hockey. Minimal ice, no refs, there refund for him should be substantial.
My girls had a bit more hockey.
I fully expect this to be a cluster phuck.

Hockey Alberta could use some of that World Junior 50/50 money to support the associations that are struggling. There should be a lot of money available.

I'll echo 8sPOT's note that our mini-season went very well. I have full faith that our association (Trails West) will do right by its members. At my sons level the volunteers are top notch.

The associations were waiting on Hockey Canada/ Alberta/ Calgary for refund money. The associations can now move forward with their own refunds.

What a shlitz show.
They should probably carry on with the cancellation and refunds and start up in a couple weeks with whoever wishes to proceed.

I hope they do this. I don't want 2 weeks of practices so the association can avoid give me more money back. Wait for a few more weeks and put together a decent spring program.
