That's why I love this weather. The pathletes and their strobing lights (even in broad daylight) go away and ride rollers inside.

Hi guys, spitballing here so bear with me. Input would be welcome.
Inglewood (close to river path south of Blackfoot) to Whitehorn, any suggestions for which route is best in the winter? Follow Deerfoot along he west side, or hop over using the new transit cooridor and take that path system (never taken it further north than Memorial)?
Also, a regular cross country bike on fresh snow? It's been so many years since I've sone that I can't even remember if it's actually viable for a reasonable commute.

I ask for two reasons: I am debating selling my only winter capable car and would be cycling or transit, and;
I have a fat bike that I purchased with the best of intentions. It's been babies and stored after a few rides. I am trying to determine if I should keep it or sell it.

Your best bet is to stick to paths as much as possible. I don’t know what is north and east of 17th ave once you cross over Deerfoot on the new path along the transitway. I’ve taken it and ridden by Max Bell but not east of there. Not in a long time anyway.

I’d go around the weir crossing to the east side of the river at Blackfoot and head north to Nose Creek. Take that to fox hollow and then ride toward 23rd St. Then navigate through some of the quieter side streets. That’s not going to be fun in the winter though since you’re going to be stuck with rutted roads which is pretty hazardous. The NE is pretty under serviced for pathways unfortunately. I think Bigtime can better comment on the state of things in the NE but he doesn’t have to go much east of Deerfoot.

took the fatbike down off the wall on the weekend to install a new dropper post on it and noted that my bottom bracket was really stiff. Went to take off pedals and the bolt is seemingly siezed. tried heating it up and no go. Will just take it tot eh bike shop and let them do their magic.

i am feeling like my thunderbolt has seen the last of bragg creek for 2019. I am going to invermere next weekend for a hockey tournament for my son, and i am planning on taking my bike to get some laps in on kloosifier

That was a slow commute today, lots of icy pathway section that were almost unrideable. I changed my route 3 times as I pictured the most dangerous spots that were coming up, and how to avoid them! I much prefer the cold dry snow to this icy crap!

I'd agree with Kermitology. Stick to the pathways as much as possible, at least you know the major ones will get cleared after snowfall. The pathway on the east side of the Bow around the weir is fully paved now, so that should make it much better for riding in the winter. Nose creek north and up the fox hollow hill and cross deerfoot over the bridge, after that I only ride to 12th street so I'm not as familiar with points further east. You could ride 12th street northeast right up to McKnight, from there a new pathway goes along McKnight eastbound all the way to 36th street and then curves south taking you right to Whitehorn. You are going out of your way a little farther north doing this route, but it keeps you on pathways and off side roads which could get nasty in the winter (like kermitology said). Or you could go from 12th street to 27th avenue and then go north on 19th to get to the McKnight pathway. I ride 19th street sometimes for extra long morning rides when its nice out. It got repaved last year and is in excellent shape.

Edit: We need habernac to jump in here, as he commutes into that Sunridge area and probably has some good tips and routes.

The path extends east from the pedestrian overpass through Vista Heights. That's plowed all winter, I take it all the way to the Brick near Superstore, my work is right by the mall there. Not sure there's a pathway option that links to the north more to Whitehorn from there.

Yeah there were some nasty rutted icy drifts around Telus Spark and all over the place in Lynwood.

^ wow, that is most impressive.

last weekend my son had a hockey tourney in invermere. he is on the injued reserve list right now, so itook him just so he could hang with the fellas, but i took my mtn bike to invermere. Rode Kloosifier and Johnson, both awesome trail networks and some great views of the Toby Creek.

Also spent some time this week getting the fatbike ready to go. Had to take it into the shop last week as the bottom bracket had started to seize up and I could not get the crank bolt off Took off the studded tires for the early part of the season, and installed a new one up dropper post. Also got apiece of kydex (really malleable plastic when you use a heat gun on it)) to make myself a somewhat decent chain stay protector

Yeah, pretty awesome for Matt. Reminds me of Brett Wolfe. Wasn't he in the transrockies when you were Habernac?

No, but I did meet him the year I rode the 24 solo. He didn't even wear a prosthetic. Dude was unreal. He joked that he had less weight to ride up the hills with.

i dont really know how to ask this, but does anyone have experience with insurance/claims after being struck by a vehicle?

my wife was hit by a car during her commute going super slow and it broke her pedals/warped her front wheel. is there any way to get new pedals and a wheel trueing via our insurance or would we have to go through theirs?

Call your insurance company. They will handle all communications with the other party and their insurance.

does it matter if we dont have insurance on our bikes? i dont even know which insurance company to contact...the place we get home/auto insurance from? her health insurance via work?

thanks for the response, i wish i could come to this thread with something to talk about aside from me or my wife getting into wrecks lol
