100% true. I thought the same thing. But the score was 5-1 and the Blues had already mentally checked out at that point. Even after the time out Berube called, his team did squat. Think I remember the shot clock showing the Flames up 32-8 at one point, literally a 4-1 ratio.

In Darryl’s system, Gio can thrive because it hides his biggest fault as a hockey player. The way Ward had the team checking, it was not ideal for the way this team is built. Maybe for a roster like Vegas, but not the slow as molasses Flames. Under Sutter though, the D have so much more back support and they can step up and make plays which really leverages Gio’s decision making and instincts more which is still at an extremely high level.
Did people not see the Seattle games this season? Gio can still play. He practically willed the Kraken to victory on his own. You don’t think Darryl saw that and said “I could use that guy.”

This team needed a new culture and identity. Gio was the face of the Flames all those years since Iggy left. Gio represented an era, and that era is over, despite how serviceable of a player he is right now.

Might seem like the perfect fit but its not. It would end up being a distraction that no one would admit as being one out of respect.

The Flames identity was forged last season WITH Gio though. This team isn’t that different from the team that finished last season. In my opinion, there was a big shift in the team’s competitiveness once Gaudreau was moved on to a line with Lindholm and Tkachuk last season, that was this team’s turning point.
And Gio was a big piece in the team’s turnaround. He probably had the best individual performance out of anyone on the team.

Dude was an absolute force. Imagine this kind of stat line from a rental player. I’d take that in a heartbeat. I know the Flames have been looking at Ben Chariot too. If Chariot can do the above and come in at a cheaper acquisition cost, I’d probably take that as well.

And last game a Flame was interfered with coming back to defend on the Wetsaddle go ahead goal.
I guess those things just even out game to game.

I agree, the team did need a new a culture shift and they got, last season. Like I’ve already said, I don’t think this team’s culture and identity changed this season, it began last season and has continued this season.
A lot about hockey is plug and play and I think under Darryl, there’s not a single player I can think of who plugs into Darryl’s system more than Gio. It was Sutter himself who called Gio this team's best defenseman last year and it was also Sutter who demoted Hanifin and promoted Gio in the lineup.
I’m just saying, don’t be surprised if Gio is back in red some time next month.

My biggest concern with re-acquiring Gio is that Seattle isn't going to just give him away and they'll probably have to get a middleman to retain some salary, which adds to the cost.
I think the assets can be better spent elsewhere to acquire players that will help the team more than Gio would.

Like a 1st for Chiarot I read that the Flames have been sniffing around Ben Chiarot recently and the price tag I’ve seen listed is a 1st which some team out there will likely pay. Hopefully not us because I don’t think Chiarot brings enough offensive flair to be worth a first round pick.

Ben Chiarot is not good.
Treliving would be a fool to acquire him.

I’d trade Kylington to get Gio back way before I’d trade a 1st for Chiarot.
Chiarot ####in blows. Tyler Pitlick on defense.

I am not convinced about bringing Gio back, however, one way that it might make sense would be if we traded Hanifin for a strong top 6 forward. I don't like Gio-Andersson as a pairing, but something like this might work:
Giordano - Tanev
Kylington - Andersson
Zadorov - Gudbranson
It would all depend of course, on what kind of asset we could get for Hanifin. Thoughts on that?

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Gio is 38 and won't have a contract. And shouldn't get one from Calgary. Hanifin is 25 and has what, 3 more years left?
Unless the asset back is a top pairing defender around 25 years old with a few years left on a team friendly deal I don't think its a good move even if the plan is to go all in for this deadline.

What?
I want no part of Chiarot either, but no effing way Kylington is on the table.
