Doesn't mean they never do though - that's where I turn to the scouting reports to see why they like him, and if it is reasons that are worth being interested in.
Who was the last overager that had such an explosive increase in production that turned into a player?

Tampa Bay Lightning player Tyler Johnson is one that comes to mind after some thinking.

Yet his increase in production was not as drastic as Gawdin's.

Interesting find. I think Johnson is one of those true late bloomers. He only played four years of junior, because he started late. Not sure if that contributed to him not being drafted, or if that was just his lack of size. To think, Johnson played second fiddle to the likes of Mitch Wahl and Kyle Beach.

Jason Demers and Wayne Simmonds were overagers.

After round two, overagers have better odds of making it than typical 18 year old draft selections, especially if they are high point producers.

Lots of players finishing their regular seasons today.

Sting played the final game of their regular season today. Ruzicka along with other star players did not dress as the outcome of this game had no impact on playoff seeding.

Ruzicka finishes the regular season with 63gp 36g 36a 72pts +21 58.6% faceoff% and 3.75sog/g

Ruzicka finishes 3rd on Sarnia in points and 2nd in points/game. After starting the season looking like he could take the OHL scoring title, Ruzicka finishes 28th in OHL pts/g, 26th in OHL points, and tied for 14th in OHL goals.

Joly finishes the regular season with 55gp 23g 45a 68pts +1 44.6% faceoff% and 2.61 sog/g

He finishes 12th in the QMJHL in points/game (well technically there is still 1 QMJHL game still being played tomorrow). He finished 1st on the team in pts/g and 2nd in points

Unfortunately, Gawdin loses the WHL scoring title by 4 points. He played yesterday after missing a few games with illness, but was a late scratch in today's last regular season game.

Gawdin finishes the regular season with 67gp 56g 69a 125pts +61 58.0% faceoff% and 4.02 sog/g

Gawdin also finished the regular season on a 27 game point streak putting up 24 goals and 28 assists in that span.

Gawdin finishes 2nd in WHL points, 3rd in WHL goals, 3rd in WHL assists, 2nd in WHL PP goals, and 1st in WHL +/-. In terms of points/game he was 2nd in the WHL.

Phillips finishes the regular season with 71gp 47g 64a 111pts +20 and 3.83sog/g.

Phillips finishes in 10th in the WHL for pts/g. 5th in WHL points, 5th in WHL goals

Dube finishes the regular season with a bang putting up 2g+2a +3 in the final regular season game a 8-1 victory. Named 1st star.

53gp 38g 46a 84pts +17 54.4% faceoff% and 4.43sog/g

Dube finishes 9th in the WHL for points/game. Finishes 2nd on the Rockets behind Kole Lind in points and points/game.

Zach Fischer hasn't played since Feb 10 and tomorrow is the last regular season game for the chiefs.
46gp 22g 14a 36pts +13 3.83sog/g

Valimaki still has another game tomorrow but got 1st star tonight with 2 assists in a 4-3 loss
42gp 14g 29a 43pts +15 3.95sog/g

Hitmen play tomorrow and Schneider is expected to start. Will be his final WHL game as the Hitmen didn't make the playoffs. Due to the sheer number of starts and minutes he got, Schneider is set to break some Hitmen goaltending records. Could see him join KC or Stockton after that.

Except for Schneider, all Flames' CHL prospects had their respective teams qualify for the playoffs.

note: there are still games being played tomorrow so the league wide stat rankings may differ after tomorrow's games

Nope. Wayne Simmons played his second year of junior hockey at the age of 19 and played in the NHL on the Los Angeles Kings as a 20 year old. Jason Demers played his fourth year of junior at age 19, was drafted in the 7th round after that season, and then played the following season in the AHL for the Worcester Sharks as a 20 year old.

Simple chart to share. NHLe progression for the Flames forward prospects:

notes:

NHLe is not a perfect stat and has some flaws, they are well noted

Draft refers to the season the player was first eligible for the NHL draft and not when the Flames drafted them.

Mangiapane was included for some context as he was a high scoring CHL forward and recently made the jump to pro. The dip in his draft+3 year is his first AHL season.

Phillips is gonna be a good one. I haven't felt this good about a WHL prospect since Kulak.

Nick Schneider assigned to the Heat after being blown out 7-3 last night. He still managed to get 1st star honors (more from some Hitmen goaltending records being broken)

Valimaki picked up 2 assists last night in a 5-2 win.
43gp 14g 31a 45pts +15 4.16 sog/g
Finished 7th in WHL pts/g by a d-man.

NHLe progression for d-men prospects

Notes:

NHLe is not a perfect stat and has some flaws, they are well noted

Draft refers to the season the player was first eligible for the NHL draft and not when the Flames drafted them.

Wotherspoon is included for some context.

Fox's draft year NHLe probably should be discounted as using NHLe for the USHL is pretty wacky. ECAC also has a pretty brutal translation factor.

Hmm. Maybe spoon will be a nice late bloomer for whoever ends up signing him.

Very likely he signs in Vancouver, they have no defenceman, the coach is familiar with him and collecting former Winterhawks, and he's a local boy.

I've never thought Wotherspoon looked out of place during his NHL stints, just never too impressive. I bet he sticks elsewhere. I could also see him drifting up north to the place that shall not be named if Brossoit is still around.

http://chl.ca/article/rockets-dillon...er-of-the-week

Quote:
The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Calgary Flames prospect Dillon Dube of the Kelowna Rockets is the CHL Player of the Week for the final week of regular season action ending March 18 scoring four goals and three assists for seven points in two games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.

Dube extended his personal point-streak to eight with a pair of multi-point performances last week that helped the Rockets clinch their seventh B.C. Division title in franchise history with a record of 43-22-5-2. On Wednesday night Dube scored twice including the game-winner while adding an assist as part of a 6-3 win over the Prince George Cougars. He wrapped up the season with a first star effort tallying two goals and two assists in an 8-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants. Dube and the Rockets will begin their quest for the Ed Chynoweth Cup on Thursday in Game 1 of their first round WHL playoff series against the Tri-City Americans.

Was bored so I bought the Rockets-Tri City playoff game and Valimaki looks really really good. Just had a play where he seemed to dangle around 3-4 players. Really gets up into the rush fast. He’s an excellent skater, Tri City up 2-0. Wonder if Valimaki or Dube get a game with the flames if their team gets eliminated.

Wow, some pretty awful reffing in this game. Dube gets a game mis conduct for being pushed into the goalie on the rush. Pretty crazy call. Dube looked quite good this game, Tri City goalie been playing great.

Valimaki gets an assist on a great cross ice pass on the PP. Finishes the game with 2 assists in a 5-0 win
